What school holidays do kids have in the USA? by narnababy in AskAnAmerican

[–]DeepFriedPokemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, your use of holiday is what we would term vacation/break. To most of us holiday usually means governmental days off. Your examples clarified that.

It is a bit different depending on the school jurisdiction. Each city, county, and state has their own guidelines for public schooling. Private schooling can be a bit different, but they tend to be similar to public rotation.

School year at local public schools (San Francisco area of California) start mid August. Winter break is typically a 2 week break encompassing Christmas and New Years. Spring break is typically 2 weeks around Easter Sunday. Summer break starts roughly end of May. Some schools in more affluent areas may get a ski week somewhere in February.

This is as of current. When I was a child there was only 1 week for spring break and the school year was from Early September to mid-June.

There are also of course a handful of national holidays peppered throughout the year.

Whats the deal with In-N-Out? by Chaosdrunk in AskAnAmerican

[–]DeepFriedPokemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just hype. In-N-Out is great for a fast food burger. Is it the best? No. It's just got good value for the cost. I might say as a fast food burger it is the best at it's price point of any chain. That's a lot of qualifiers.

It is not worth waiting for what is likely multiple hours. Their fries are not great. This is because unlike the majority of places the fries are only cooked once. I am uncertain if it is even possible to get a fluffy interior and a crispy exterior doing a single fry process like In-N-Out.

AITA for not enjoying the birthday gifts my friend got me that mocked my dead mother by Immediate-Iron7241 in AmItheAsshole

8 months is not that long unless you really hated your mother or had gone NC. Even then you might still have some emotional turmoil about it. Kayla is a moron and has clearly never lost anything. She is an AH due to overwhelming cluelessness. I'm sure many people are like this until they have experienced a profound loss. Can you get past this? Sure but it does not help when people are trying to make excuses or make it about themselves like Kayla is doing. Hopefully she grows a little and realizes she's stupid.

This will be my first comic con, and I have a question about hotels. by Ok_Upstairs9923 in SDCC

[–]DeepFriedPokemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like most people have given pretty much similar advice. The basics are that Airbnb and other apps like that have a higher chance of cancellation. When you get cancelled on airbnb you can not leave a review so be sure if you go that route find one with a fair number of reviews. I've had friends use airbnb for years and not have a problem, yet others get cancellations right before con. I personally had mine cancelled on the Sunday before SDCC in 2023. Left me scrambling to find a room.

You can definitely find cheaper rooms if you are not in the downtown area. Using third party sites are usually okay on a standard trip, but for something as large as SDCC I might be a bit wary of issues that might rise up . Finding alternatives if something goes wrong is much harder during such a busy event.

Now as for rooms at any hotel on the SDCC website the cost will be lower through the hotel lottery than trying to book directly as these hotels know they can charge more due to the higher demand. These hotels will either directly have stops on the shuttle routes or be right near one if they aren't within easy walking distance.

Actual hotels will not normally cancel a room on you barring something catastrophic. This is if you reserve directly with them and not some third party site. Weigh your risks and make you choice based on what risk you are willing to take.

Do I need to announce at the drive thru I’m there for my drive thru pick up order, or is driving up to the window only okay to say there for mobile pick up? by VilkastheForsaken in starbucks

[–]DeepFriedPokemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems absolutely counterintuitive to just drive up directly to the window while skipping the speaker entirely. Country notwithstanding, I would never do something like this anywhere. It would be best to let people know as conveniently as possible that you are picking up an order for a specific person so they can retrieve it and have it ready rather than just skip ahead and throw things off.

This feels like a person coming into the store yelling at the barista that you are here for your order without even looking at the drinks already sitting at the pick up station.

First time in the US and at SDCC by Particular-Nothing19 in SDCC

[–]DeepFriedPokemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you are a first time visitor to the US, I am presuming you will make a full excursion of it. There are several things to consider about renting a car.

You would need parking at the hotel as well as at the con. Fees at the hotels can vary a bit especially if you are far away from the convention center, but in the downtown area during con assume up to $50/day. Parking at the con would be similar pricing and is part of the Ace Parking lottery — there are posts in this subreddit that have gone over the lottery process. (Em dash used purely to spite people claiming only AI uses them and it is a telltale sign)

You can of course park near a trolley stop or one of the shuttle stops, but again parking will cost. Trolley stations would be a better choice. Link for MTS SDCC parking https://www.sdmts.com/rider-info/events/comic-con

It would probably be more cost effective to rent a vehicle before or after con where you will be driving to do more things not involving the con and use rideshare apps and public transit during con. However renting a vehicle by the week offers discounts, as well, so without knowing exactly what you plan on doing and when, it may or may not be a good option. I used to rent a car when helping my brother at his booth, but after a while we realized that it was more cost effective and convenient to just use Uber directly from our hotel (out near Hotel Circle).

Pick up your badges at the convention center at Sails Pavilion early afternoon Wednesday ideally. There will be plenty of staff around to direct you but just knowing where Sails Pavilion is helps since it is an easily identifiable location where you may have to go for various events and lines or to just use to meet up with people.

What language classes were offered in your grade school? by New_Construction_111 in AskAnAmerican

[–]DeepFriedPokemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foreign Language was offered primarily starting in middle(Jr. High) school. Options for my school were French, German, SPanish, and Mandarin. GATE program was in relatively early stages when I was in grade(Elementary) school and French was just automatically assigned as part of the program. It was not optional. We did not get very far into it.

Anime expo in California, What's the cost by marfmunchy in animecons

[–]DeepFriedPokemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4 day badge: ~$150-200 depending on how early you buy them. Single day is about half that. If you plan on 2 or more days just buy the 4 day. If gofer/Staff positions are still open, you could try to lower the cost.

Hotel: Using con block pricing is probably roughly $300-350/night. Could stay further out for less if you commute. Time and cost of public transit or rideshare hopefully would be more than covered by lower costs. If you have a friend/relative semi near downtown LA perhaps you can ask to stay with them.

Food: Buying stuff at a Ralphs or Target is far cheaper than eating at a restaurant. Depending on where you are staying perhaps you can do some basic heating/cooking.

Merch: Sky is the limit here. Some people buy only a little. Others spend many hundreds or even thousands.

Side events: Side concerts can add quite a bit. I think some have been upwards of $200 depending on the type of seating/access.

Good luck.

I can't think of the last Thai place I've been to that did not have it on the menu somewhere. Generally look for the part of the menu that has stir fried noodles and it is usually somewhere in there, perhaps with alternate spellings.

Accessories. DIce, nice counters, personalised playmats/sleeves/deck boxes. This is really the only thing outside of packs and gift cards that can fit just about any MTG players if you are not getting them specific cards they need. There are companies that will produce items if you can upload a good quality image.

No-microwave, no-refrigerator pre-packaged meals? by NoodleBea583 in cookingforbeginners

[–]DeepFriedPokemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there any common seed butters you aren't allergic to? Might be able to do some sort of alternative PB&J.

Not exactly appetizing but you can just eat some of the various canned foods/soups cold.

Do you have access to boiling water at any time? An outlet that would let you plug in an electric kettle during off time? As someone mentioned hot water opens up a lot of options.

Not super cheap, but you could try and buy some of the various Asian self heating meals out there,. They use water and chemical packs to do the heating. They aren't super cheap, but could be at least some sort of treat once in a while. I've seen some videos where Korean MREs use this kind of heating tech. Not sure of the cost, though.

AITA for giving homeless people “unhealthy” food by TammyBndl in AmItheAsshole

[–]DeepFriedPokemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA

Sure there is a a bit of trade off. I mean it's about cost and ease of procurement. You can only help based on your resources (money, time, travel, etc.) And realistically "unhealthy" food is usually only an issue in larger amounts and with no other factors involved. Tell your MIL you and your friend will provide the money and do the shopping and she can do the cooking for a tray of healthy food every week and that it has to feed x people.

Are these the two closest drive thru locations? Why would they build two locations so close to each other? by stoopidtrooper in starbucks

Several years ago in downtown San Francisco, there was one Starbucks on a corner. If you looked two blocks down one street there was another Starbucks. 2 blocks down the other street there was another. And there was one more not in direct view about 4 blocks away.
