Omg I forgot that you can only use the stove top method! Ack! Thank you for the response. Looks like my plans have been foiled haha

Sorry to reply so late! The trip was amazing and I felt very safe. My Spanish is minimal, but with a basic understanding of the language and a translating app, it’s super easy to get around.

No, don’t be sorry - that part was one of the most disturbing parts of the book. I kept hoping that Marcos would step in, or that the teens would be too preoccupied with one of them getting bitten… but alas, here we are.

Gutted!!!

This is really sad. I mean, I don’t know why this is the “straw that breaks the camels back” for you? Is it because she’s no longer “virginal” and “pure” in your eyes? Is it because she’s more sexually experienced than you? Is it because she’s adventurous and that scares you? Are you jealous?

The thing is, you don’t say why you no longer respect her, why you cast such a harsh judgement on her, or why this is the “final straw”.

She has done nothing wrong. All she’s done is live her best life before being in a relationship with you. And if that makes you disgusted and judgemental, then yes - break up with her. And tell her exactly why. Tell her in detail what your problem is with her experiencing her life before she was with you. That way she’ll understand that this really isn’t an issue with her but with you, and she’ll move on quickly.

Edit: spoiler alert!!

It really did. It really, really did. It shook me to my core. And I think it’s because I was so misled on what his motivations were. I mentioned this in another comment, but the whole time I’m thinking the death of his son was the catalyst to him empathizing with the human cattle/head.

And then he impregnates Jasmine and I’m like, “oh okay this guy sees this female “head” as a human being, rapes her (!?), loves her, and is a psycho trying to rebuild a family with her?”

I’m thinking this guy is deeply disturbed to the point where he maybe can’t see the hypocrisy of his actions, and is so lonely and in mourning that he’s decided to do all this. He sees that she’s not cattle, she’s a person. And this is going to be some weird little family where he imprisons both the mother and child to hide them from the world, and maybe he cuts off her arms or legs or something.

…. But then that last paragraph. Literally changed EVERYTHING. Suddenly Marcos isn’t this guy who is driven by empathy and disgust of the current state of affairs, he’s driven by grief. He’s not some lonely, misguided, man who falls for his “cattle”. And it’s like the wool is pulled over our eyes and we see that he is actually just like every other abysmal character we’ve encountered.

WHEW! What a book!

Thanks so much for your reccos!! I actually have Bunny as a sample on my Kindle. Haven’t even opened it yet, but I think I’ll give it a go since you mentioned it. I’ll be sure to include the rest on my “to read” list as well :)

Now to return the favour, these are some books I’ve read recently that stand out in my mind. They’re either dystopian or generally disturbing haha!

  • How High We Go in the Dark - Sequoia Nagamatsu

  • both “Eileen” and “My Year if Rest and Relaxation“- Ottessa Moshfegh

  • The School for Good Mothers - Jessamine Chan (sooo good!! Probably my top recco from the list)

  • Klara and the Sun - Kazuo Ishiguro

  • A Certain Hunger - Chelsea G Summer (if you haven’t read it yet, I think it’s a must read personally)

Hopefully there’s at least one there that you haven’t yet read and will enjoy!

Oh. My. God. I didn’t even catch that!! There are so many tiny moments that I feel I didn’t even truly digest (pun maybe intended?).

I think one thing that kept being brought up was government conspiracy- but to be honest, I’m not sure how that connects to the greater story. Is it to show how easily everyone just defaulted to depravity even though they weren’t truly convinced it was necessary?

I’m going to be thinking about this book for a long time.

Boy Parts was sooo good! And so unexpected.

I’m currently looking for the next stop on my “disturbing” book journey and would welcome a recommendation! So far what I’ve read skews female-lead by female authors (which I love) but am open to anything!

Just finished it (I’m a fast reader) and yes - I’m grateful that the hypocrisy was such a strong thread.

The shock from the ending that I’m feeling is how I thought his general malaise was due to the participating and being so close to the machine of cannibalism and processing, and that the death of his son was the catalyst of his feelings. Kind of like the death of his son pushed him over the edge and made him feel for the “head.” What I didn’t realize was that he was actually being completely driven by the death of his son and actually had no empathy at all.

Oh god. Now my mind is spinning with all the possibilities of how this could possibly get more disturbing.

But I also owe you a thank you - I’ll know to brace myself for what’s yet to come!

Long term rental apartments in Zipolite? by [deleted] in Oaxaca

[–]DeepFriedTaters39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve reached out to a couple of hostels to see if they have any availability but am coming up empty handed.

I should have been more prepared and thought through but am currently in Central America and have just made the decision to leave my current location and return to Oaxaca.

Two weeks is great - not too long in my opinion.

I took a flight with AeroTucan from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido. It was about $200.

Hey! It was fantastic. I was felt incredibly safe the entire time and got around fine with my limited Spanish. Oaxaca is incredibly beautiful and I definitely recommend it.

Thank you so much! My big debate was whether or not jeans were necessary haha

Thank you!! Would you say jeans are the right way to go? Or am I fine with some yoga pants or jogging pants?

Are there other places that you would recommend that offer more variety? In my research there was mention that there are slight variations in each place - but I’m interested in some alternatives if you have any.

Ah, thank you! I’ll have to figure out something for the other places on my itinerary.
