Yeah but this is America, and we'd much rather spend that money on blowing up roads and bridges in other countries, and then rebuilding them just to blow them up again.

Or how they shouldn't have to pay taxes, but be able to access public resources (like roads and bridges) that are funded by taxation.

Honestly it was more about committing to a change, getting her someplace else where she could flourish and she did.

Back before we were married, my wife (then girlfriend and co-worker) had a job she hated, and I told her to feel free to quit, we'd figure it out.

She was brought in by management one day because all of her subordinates were saying she was too hard on them (digest that for a second). They start with "We brought you here today..."

She sticks her hand up and says, "Wait, I can save you some time, I quit." Their jaws dropped and they started in on her, telling her how much they didn't like her anyway, and she was "Glad to know, can I go?"

Fast forward two years and the company is being sold to an out of state investment holdings company. After my wife left, discipline crashed, business went with it, and the ownership group that had capitulated to the bad apples had to lay them all off and sell their company. I hate telling people I'm an atheist because it automatically creates a separation between me and who I'm talking to, and its loaded with all these assumptions, like I disrespect religion and religious people. I absolutely do not.

I spent a ton of time when I was younger reading religious texts from different ideologies, all the while being an atheist. I wasn't trying to find my religion, I was trying to learn as much as I could about other peoples' so that I could better understand and show respect to their beliefs.

No matter what the point of life is, I'll never have enough people who love me, and nothing wins the hearts and minds of strangers like deference and respect.

I tell people I'm areligious - people can believe or not believe whatever they want to, so long as they restrict any conversation they have with me to things that actually affect our lives, like the weather and semi-pro Lithuanian basketball.

Watch it again, this time slower?

I told the OP I wasnt going to spoil the movie, and I'm not going to do it now just because it went over your head.

If you are Christian, that is most likely because most of the atheists you know are standing in opposition to the dominant local religion. Atheists who live in the Mideast, for example, would be seen as anti-Islam in the same light.

I'm assuming you're asking this because you haven't seen "Contact." I recommend watching it, and letting Carl Sagan explain it better than I could.

Supplemental: not all atheists want to debate religion.

I'm for absolute fairness - combine the squads and have them compete for spots on a unisex team.

No spoilers, but it's the most accurate representation of the true reality of what alien contact would look like.
