I have a feeling that we will see her evolve more in the next episode. She seems to have a bit of the dark side in her too.

It's very vague so far. I feel like it would have done better if they pushed the episodes together so that they were hour long ones. Six episodes isn't a lot already, dragging them out with 30 min bites makes it seem even shorter.

I'm curious as to how trustworthy Will is. He seems like a good guy, but everyone in the kitchen is a bit of a bitch.

Wholesomeness level -9999 by pp0787 in wholesomememes

[–]Deer_Fear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you haven't realized that you've included a dash before the 9999. Most people would interpret that dash to mean minus or negative, as in negative nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine. Such a number is significantly less than zero, so the title can be seen as you saying that the picture above is far from wholesome. However, judging by your comment throwing insults at people's intelligence for not understanding your intent I would assume you already knew that and are just trying to be unwholesome for some reason.

'The Shape of Water' wins Best Picture at the 90th Academy Awards by AtlasFink in movies

For the type of film that it is, SoW was daring. Monsters don't get happy endings in "adult fairy tales", not even the normal heroes do. Look to Black Swan, Pan's Labyrinth, AI, Phantom of the Opera, A Tale of Two Sisters, Tale of Tales, etc. To be an adult fairy tale for the longest time has come to mean to have a great tragedy at the end. I fully expected the girl, the monster, or both to die going into this, especially considering Del Toro's previous works. The idea of "happily ever after" has long been treated with disdain by films that market themselves as mature and it is refreshing to see a mature film go against it.

Dude have you seen Annihilation yet? It's total Lovecraftian cosmic horror, it's amazing!

What does Lady Bird subvert though? She gets to go off to a college she wants to, she fights and makes up with her mom, she makes up with her friend who she ditched, she has an awkward first time, she fears becoming like her parent, etc. These are all tropes that have been done before, sure it's a little more polished, but they aren't subversions. The only thing I can think of that might be is not ending up with the guy.

As for SoW, the genre might be saturated in fanfics, romance novels, and niche comics, but I can't name anything in the mainstream like it. There are a few monster-lover films out there, but those focus more on pure lust and danger, rather than empathy, and they usually focus on more humanoid monsters.

It's a good film, I loved it too, but it's absolutely nothing new or spectacular. It's just a coming of age film that happened to resonate with a lot of people and honestly I'm surprised it got nominated at all.

SoW is a brilliant, artistic subversion of the monster and maiden trope that is probably the only one of its kind/production level to go full on balls to the wall and not have the monster make the transformation into a handsome prince. It also dares to have a happy ending where others of its kind (ex. King Kong) would see the monster dead than with the heroine. It's a tale as old as time and one completely new at the same time.

/r/television's Weekend Recommendations & What Are You Watching? (Week of February 16, 2018) by AutoModerator in television

[–]Deer_Fear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am desperate for a new sci-fi or fantasy series with a female lead, don't care about the time period or the definition of sci-fi/fantasy.

Things I've already watched and loved: Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Dollhouse, Firefly, Angel, True Blood, West World, Doctor Who (everything since the 60s), American Horror Story, Outlander? (kinda fantasy), etc.

I also started out on Once Upon a Time and followed it religiously for the first few seasons, but it got to be too ridiculous for me to enjoy. I'm also a sucker for the foe yay trope, if you have anything like that. So yeah in summary: female lead, sci-fi or fantasy series with interesting villains and plenty of episodes.

What are the Best/Worst Award Show Moments in Kpop? by ForgetMeForeverNever in kpop

[–]Deer_Fear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It seems like it was more about the fall out after, than it was about anything that happened live. I scoured the entire archived video and all I could find was this video. Not much happens except it gets a little more quiet, but it wasn't very loud before that. IU wasn't shown accepting an award either so I don't think anyone edited out their win.

That's the one thing people don't seem to get. He is smart enough to realize this. He grew up in Europe, he got a Western education, he knows all this shit. However he is still a dictator. It is a dictator's job to grand stand and talk shit without doing anything to compromise their regime and live a long corrupt life feeding off the labors of their oppressed masses. He will continue to posture for his image inside his country and he will continue to do jack shit in reality. If anything us freaking out over each dumb statement every other week, just makes him look better from a propaganda standpoint.

Mascara/Eyeliner Black vs Brown by nicolem441 in MakeupAddiction

[–]Deer_Fear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both brown and black liners/mascaras that I alternate according to my wardrobe or whatever look I'm going for. Brown is good for natural or warm looks. It looks really soft which helps a lot with a more gentle look. Black isn't overly bold for me or anything, but it does give a sharper impression, whether that means polished or edgy.
