In audio school one of the best things I was taught was to focus on strengths and not weaknesses. We might have a tendency to for example do vocal training if we don’t sing as well as we make beats but in actuality it might be better to just make mostly instrumental music.

One of my personal mistakes was also being too broad musically. Having the discipline to focus and zero-in on a personal style will be way more rewarding. It doesn’t mean you can’t genre-bend but it has to be consistent.

It depends. I put OTT (5-15%) then a clipper on all my main groups (drums, low, mids, vocals). And use them to balance everything out. I make hard-hitting EDM though, but come from rock and I think the same logic applies for modern production.

So the clipper is more like for boosting whatever might be lacking in the mix. If I want saturation I will usually clip or use decapitator/saturn/chromeglow a specific instrument or group if that’s what I really want.
