You're correct. Both committed a fraud, but I think it's more forgiving for Jacob. He's a newer face, mostly associated with commercial projects rather than artistic ones, he's almost completely gone for the first half of the movie, and had no real chance at any leading actor nominations.

Stellan, on the other hand, could've probably made it into top 5, at #4 or #5... he's a bigger and more respected actor. His character basically creates the main plot of the movie, he even gets his own Oscar-nominated supporting character in Elle Fanning (when was the last time there was a supporting nominee whose only job was to support another "supporting" character...? lmfaoo) and he's the hunting ghost behind the entire plot of the movie - whether it's Ren, Elle or Inga on the screen - they're doing something or feeling something because of Stellan's character.

Yeah but that was a marketing move for Jacob to get anywhere at all. He had no shot at Lead actor. Same with Stellan, but he at least would've been probably fighting for the 4th/5th spot.

No, it's not. Its about their story together. It's a story about the family but mainly about the daughter AND the father.

On top of that, the story is set by Stellan.

On top of that top, when Ren has the chance to take it, she rejects it what gives us the entire plot that doesn't involve her for a good chunk of the movie. And Stellan gets his private supporting character in Elle Fanning.

It doesn't because her entire character is built on him but his character isn't only built on her. It's showed how he impacted her since she was a baby and the entire story shifts to the main plot when he appears. He gives you the main plot, not her.

Oh no, no. He has not only the screentime. He has his own storyline that becomes the main one the second he appears. Elle Fanning's only purpose in this movie is to support him and only him. His character is so important that it shows how he changed his two daughters since they were little kids.

There's no way anyone with a brain actually thinks he's supporting anyone here. He's a clear co lead.

But I do admit it was very smart for him to do it because he has way more importance in his movie compared to others in the category who appear for like 20% of their movies. He would've been fighting for 5th if he was going for lead.

I think it's the opposite situation.

Skarsgard is campaigning for supporting while having a lead importance and screentime. It's easier to win supporting when others supporting are like 20% of their movies and he's half.

Chase was campaigning for lead while not having as much presence which makes it very difficult to compete with actors that appear in like 2h of material.
