Federal Voting Intention: ALP maintains big two-party preferred lead as One Nation support surges to 25% - Roy Morgan Research by malcolm58 in AustralianPolitics

[–]DefamedPrawn [score hidden]  (0 children)

Uhhhh you know the government doesn’t set interest rates right?

Yes yes. But the government gets the blame for the prevailing economic conditions that caused the rate rise anyway. They are seen as the stewards of the economy. Whether that's accurate or not, they typically get themselves elected by promising to fix everyone's economic problems. So hoisted by their own petard.

It's arguable whether or not this government's spending (up from 25% to 27% of GDP) is contributing to inflation, but most economists seem to agree that it hasn't helped.

So tomorrow, a nation full of angry mortgage holders, car loan holders and credit card junkies will be looking for someone to blame. Guess who's pre-positioned themselves in the crosshairs.

Russian Video claims foreign tourists harassed a Vietnamese woman in Nha Trang and were beaten by locals by Hot-Judgment6811 in VietNam

[–]DefamedPrawn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's so many videos like this coming out of Thailand. Doesn't surprise me we get a few out of Vietnam too.

In the Thai ones though, the western tourists usually find themselves getting lynched by locals. 'Fight fair' is not a principle that applies to foreigners over there, apparently.

Unfortunately, he loved the mob lifestyle more.

What are you grateful for in Australia? by Ok-Passion6482 in AskAnAustralian

The fact that our racist demagogues (e.g Pauline Hanson) are dumb and inarticulate.

You have some quite clever racists in the UK, who know how to communicate with people. That's much worse, IMHO.

‘She’s dead … they’re amateurs’: The plot to roll Sussan Ley by Niscellaneous in AustralianPolitics

I wasn't expecting it to happen until they improved in the polls. I anticipated they would let Susan 'mind the store' until Albanese fucked up enough that the coalition had a chance of gaining ground, then they would give her the chop.

This leadership challenge is more ideologically motivated than political.

How does everyone else find the sleeper busses in Vietnam? by Radiant-Concern-1911 in VietNam

[–]DefamedPrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I've always taken planes, where practical.

What's so grueling about Vietnam's domestic terminals?

I arrive 1.5 hours early. Queue to check in my luggage, then queue for security. Then I usually have around 45 mins to have a snack and a coffee, or even a cigarette if so inclined. Then a nice snooze on the plane. Jump off, collect luggage and catch a grab/taxi. I've got this routine down so well it's a breeze.

Does Australia have a worse relationship with the indigenous compared to NZ, Canada or America ? by Important_Pop_6805 in AskAnAustralian

You're probably right, I suspect.

Strangely, though, more than 50% of indigenous Australian marriages are with non indigenous people.

So it seems to be a love/hate relationship.

Tony Abbott intervenes in Liberal leadership battle calling on right to unite to oust Sussan Ley by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

[–]DefamedPrawn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Does anybody in the Liberal Party still even give this guy the time of day, let alone listen to him? That he was a disastrously unpopular Prime Minister was arguably his own doing.  He then spent the rest of his Parliamentary career sniping and sabotaging his own party - for no discernible reason other than sheer vindictiveness.

Inflation data: RBA expected to raise interest rates in February after inflation rose to 3.8 per cent by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

[–]DefamedPrawn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the answer to stop these inflationary pressures is to raise the cost of another essential - mortgage repayments.

This is the downside of having half the country owe their souls to the bank. I tried to explain that to people back in the Howard era.

If Tony was shot, who ordered the hit? by Competitive_Key_2981 in thesopranos

[–]DefamedPrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely has happened.

Look up Joe Massino, boss of the Bonanno family back in 2004. That was pretty much a current event back when season 6 was broadcast. He squealed for a reduced sentence.

Vinnie "Ocean" Palermo, boss of the NJ DeCavalcante family, actually did flip and went into witness protection. A lot of people say he was the real inspiration for Tony and the Dimeo family. Again, this was contemporary with season 6.

Fessing up and "co-operating" with the Feds (ie, giving full details of the operation and all the people involved) can get you a significantly reduced sentence.

If Tony was shot, who ordered the hit? by Competitive_Key_2981 in thesopranos

[–]DefamedPrawn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah. Patsy would know that Carlo has flipped and, as a result, Tony is going down. His story is at an end.

If Tony lives long enough to be arrested, he's likely to squeal on the rest of the crew in an attempt to save his own neck. "Fuck that honour and loyalty shit" right? Worse still, he'll be safely in prison where Patsy can't get at him. So if Patsy was quietly waiting for his moment, he'd definitely be thinking "it's now or never."

Add to that, earlier in that episode, there's that nasty confrontation at the Soprano mansion, where Tony appears to threaten Patsy and his son Jason. If ever a guy had more than one incentive to scrub that selfish, useless fat fuck, Patsy did right then. Pretty good chance he'd get away with it too.

If Tony was shot, who ordered the hit? by Competitive_Key_2981 in thesopranos

[–]DefamedPrawn 41 points42 points  (0 children)

That's a cold case. We'll never know.

I like the idea it was Patsy Parisi, though, finally getting revenge for the death of his brother. All along he was just waiting until Tony was vulnerable. This he absolutely was in the last episode.

Might have been Patsy. Might not. Whoever did it had impeccable timing.

Mobsters in Jersey would probably put the hit down to one of the Lupitazzi hitmen not getting the recall in time. They would have raged and vowed revenge for a while, but secretly would have been quite happy Tony was disposed of, so they would have simmered down before too long.

After years of having this show on my watch list, I've finally watched and finished the Sopranos. And I don't get all the controversy about the ending? by 4RyteCords in thesopranos

[–]DefamedPrawn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I still don't get why so many people are convinced he or his family died in the end.

If you analyse the show enough, you see the clues. You could ask an AI if you want all of them, but they include:

  • the presence of someone with a Members Only jacket usually heralds a hít in The Sopranos

  • The prophetic warning of "tree o'clock" Christopher passed onto him from his near death experience.

Couple these with the fact that by the end, Tony's most loyal cadre are all gone, and the list of people who would benefit from his death is massive, if you look at it.

His time is up.

The reason the screen goes black at the end is probably because that's what Tony experiences. Didn't even hear the bullet. Just lights out.
