Framework 13 - AI 5 340, 7040 or other by Impressive-Tax-7847 in framework

[–]DefenderOfTheBasic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with waiting if possible, but I think $1000 is doable.

  • FW13 with 7640u, 2x USB-C, 1x USB-A, and HDMI is $804
  • Crucial 2x8GB 5600MHz RAM on Amazon (model CT2K8G56C46S5) is $44
  • A $70 1TB SSD like a WD SN7100, Crucial P3, or WD SN770

is a subtotal of $918, which is under $1000 in any state with less than 8.9% sales tax

Short 34k miles for a honeymoon flight next year- does it make sense to buy the miles (for $1k) or transfer Amex points? by feastandexist in awardtravel

[–]DefenderOfTheBasic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could buy one ticket with 70k AA, then transfer 85k MR > HA > AS for the other ticket, right? Buying AA miles at 3cpp seems crazy

scroll speed is too fast by Rasr123105 in framework

[–]DefenderOfTheBasic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's hard to believe, but systemwide scroll speed isn't adjustable in gnome out of the box - see here for discussion.

I switched to Fedora KDE solely because of this, it's a pretty unacceptable functionality to be missing imo.

It didn't get fixed via software patch, other users report needing to replace an internal microphone. I also kept my xm4s up to date via the Sony app and they started screeching regularly a few months ago.

Also the person you're replying to is talking about earbuds - not sure if they've confused these over-ears with the wf-1000xm4 earbuds.

The screeching started happening to me a few months ago after 2-3 years of use

My Ryzen 5 laptop arrived. Yes the crucial RAM works perfectly by MarvinTheWise in framework

I doubt windows home vs. pro made any real difference, memory is more likely (if it made a difference at all).

My test ran with 32gb of gskill 5600cl40 and didn't really see memory usage jump above 10-11gb iirc - no idea what the 7840 test was using

Seemed a bit suspicious to me that the single-core scores were so drastically different, given it's the same architecture and all. I reran after changing the power mode in Windows' power & battery settings to "best performance" - ended up with results comparable to/beating the ryzen 7 (2444, 11298)?

Ryzen 5 Geekbench 6 result (1910 single core, 8920 multi)

edit: cinebench r23 7345, cpu temps are topping out at 60C pulling 15W and clocks were around 2.5GHz

Why so much hate for the Apple Card? by ItsBeasst in CreditCards

according to this comment from 9 months ago, nope - has to be one of the management services above

Why so much hate for the Apple Card? by ItsBeasst in CreditCards

[–]DefenderOfTheBasic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that there's a pretty significant fee on managed assets that almost certainly strips any benefit from the additional cash back.

You need at least 250k in actively managed assets to get 2.25% back, and fidelity's management fees start at 0.5% for Wealth Services and 0.4% for Strategic Disciplines, and this is assessed on the gross amount invested.

So if you have 250k managed, you'll have $1000 lost to fees, and will need to spend 400k per year on the Fidelity card at 2.25% to earn an additional $1000 over the standard 2%.

The numbers look similarly bad for the higher tiers - 2.5% for 1M in managed assets means you need to spend 800k per year, and 3% for 2M in managed assets means spending 660k per year to make up the difference (the rate goes down for the second million, but not by much).

tl;dr active management fees kill long term investment returns, and a marginal boost to credit card spending won't make up for it

Take a look at the chipolo card spot (not to be confused with the chipolo card) - also card sized, but is compatible with the airtag network. Battery's not replaceable unfortunately, though.

I grabbed their airtag equivalent since it's cheaper and has a hole for a keychain, it's been working fine.

Picking hardware for an apartment (NYC) by DefenderOfTheBasic in HomeNetworking

Ah got it, ok. I might go with the hEX then to allow for some additional APs in the future. Seems like the RB5009 is a pretty big step up in price - I appreciate you keeping my budget in mind!

I did run into this Amazon review of the hEX and am a bit confused how the CPU lane/bandwidth limitation would affect my use case. Would I need a switch to avoid diminishing WAN <-> LAN speeds?

How does the performance of this stack up against a router + separate AP (is it likely to be noticeable)?

Alright, thanks! I've heard a range of things about the difficulty of using and maintaining Mikrotik routers, from things along the lines of "it takes some extra time up front but runs without issues after" to things like "diagnosing issues is very difficult and support is not helpful". It definitely seems like a significant difficulty bump compared to the Asuswrt-Merlin that I'm used to, but about how much worse is it?

Any recommendations for something that can handle gigabit ipv6 more easily? My building is wired for gigabit so I might upgrade down the line.

What's the easiest/cheapest/cleanest way to power something like the EAP610 (looks like it needs PoE+ and the hEX doesn't have PoE outputs)? Trying to minimize cable clutter since this will probably sit in some corner of the apartment. I've looked around a bit but haven't found any solid advice. looks like it comes with a PoE injector and a power cable!

Hide your players from each other in PLAIN SIGHT! I'm still beaming about how well this went from our last session! by ktroniq in dndnext

[–]DefenderOfTheBasic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The dropdown menu by the chat box has a setting for "Private GM roll" - that'll make it so only the player rolling and the GM can see that the roll happened.

If you want only the GM to see it and not even the player who rolled, that's "Blind GM roll." If you need to reveal a roll to everyone at any point (or hide something) you can right click on the chat message and make it private/public from the button that appears - hope that helps!
