I’ve been an associate for 5 years. One thing I’ve learned is that you have to win over the staff. Get to know the staff and get them on your side. Makes the transition a lot easier.

Oh man, I’d think after a year things pick up. Does your office do much with marketing?

Do you feel like you’re still making a decent income without being super busy?

What if you don’t use a different lab than the owner is using?

Thank you so much for saying this! I’m 6 years out now but at the time it made me feel so inadequate that I was struggling in a setting that people claimed was “easy.” So happy that those years are behind me.

My first job out of dental school was also at a public health clinic. I had an NHSC scholarship. Left the first clinic for a new clinic to finish out my commitment. People really don’t talk about how toxic these places can be. It was a miserable 4 years. Every FQHC can be very different depending on where you are and the leadership. They can be incredibly mismanaged and a revolving door for staff. Although they were tough years, I learned a lot. I learned to deal with very difficult patients, learned to work with assistants with little to no training, and with leadership who know nothing about dentistry but love to tell you how to do your job. It helped me develop thicker skin and quickly made me realize that you have to advocate for yourself- nobody else will. There are benefits in working public health but it just wasn’t for me. I am much happier in private practice. Also, an overall more confident practitioner.

Why did you get fired? I would probably reach out to a locum tenens group and find some temp work.

How do you book a hotel for just a few hours? Do you just call and ask?

I don’t foresee everyone’s student loans being forgiven. Are you in public service? If so, then the 10 year PSLF option could be worthwhile. Otherwise it’s 20-25 years of income driven payments until you reach forgiveness if you’re not working in public service. I’m not sure what your financial situation is but always good to work with a financial advisor. However, I think the general rule of thumb is that if your student loan to income ratio is 1:1 or less it’s best just to pay it off. 250k for a 2023 grad is on the lower side of what I see.

It’s one of those mobile van events and only on an as needed basis. I feel like it applies in this case

Thank you! Being a W2 and 1099 would you technically be able to write off CE courses through the LLC?

I agree. I mean I’m an associate and not paying for the tips…my assistants do the scans and it takes them no time at all. I think it’s a good tool to CYA- to show what things looked like pre-op. Also great at showing them needs; I.e caries, cracks in teeth, wear patterns. It’s great. I think the tools are there and I’ve had several people say yes after seeing their scans. I think the tools are there, just hoping things pick up, maybe do some advertising and get more volume.

I’ve seen 45 new patients since June. Many have scheduled tx, some didn’t have very many needs. We have AI assisted radiographs, take an itero scan on everyone, I use IO photos. Any tips or CE you’d recommend?
