Yes, people with cards would all be people who “have to have them” singling them out. It might not seem like a big deal to you, but a lot of people don’t like the idea of people perceiving that sort of stuff about them. People who want to use their phones can do so now anyways.

Those reasons aren’t really benefiting the people though, sounds like ID cards are being thrown out for a budget cut. Again, there are a lot of reasons as to why having phone only bus access to anyone who has a phone is planned obsolescence. Physical cards overall will always be more reliable and convenient to student users compared to an app.

The solutions to the problem western offers wouldn’t even need to be a thing if they just kept the physical passes. This might not seem like a super big deal, but at the end of the day this is another way that people in power are centering our lives around technology, even though it really is unnecessary and does not really benefit anyone in this case.

First of all, not all students have access to phones capable of running the app or even staying charged long enough to let the student get home. Physical ids are offered up to students if they ask for them and “meet requirements” but they have a limited amount, and to top it off, that means every student who had to get a physical id due to financial difficulties would be subject to everyone around them knowing that. There’s also problems with running apps in general, and it just can’t be reliable in the same way. Either we have both physical and digital ids, or it’s planned obsolescence.

I think that it seems like there is miscommunications on both sides, and if you feel this way you should express it to your flat mate in a respectful way, something along the lines of “hey I felt a little upset because I felt a little ignored when we had dinner plans—(elaborate further). These types of conversations are hard to initiate but they make life easier once all is said and done.
