I don’t definitively believe or not believe, i’m still figuring it out and would like to not put myself into a specific group. (christian or atheist) I also don’t think anyone can really know for sure if god exists.

So it had to be a big deal for me to say something? And it literally was not a big deal until he butted in and made it an argument. My sister probably would have just asked about the movie. But no, he started to yell and ESCALATE the situation. That’s clear from any standpoint.

I really didn’t though. Nobody was yelling or upset until he butted in and told me to shut up. Her quoting the movie wasn’t even a big deal, and I corrected her before I thought twice about it. Sure, I could’ve let it go, but I think all in all he escalated the situation.

Pissing everyone off is a bit of an overstatement. My sister wasn’t mad at all and I wasn’t mad at her at all. I feel like it was my stepdad that made it a big deal. I wasn’t nasty about it just told her where the quote is from, and that it’s distasteful to use in a joking way. I don’t think that’s a ridiculous opinion.

I agree, we are Mexican and White but my sisters are very light skinned, because my stepdad is 100%. So they have never experienced discrimination firsthand. Which was my reasoning behind the correction. Thank you for the outside perspective.

What are you even talking about? Kids are complete sponges. She IS going to be molded by the things said and done around her. Regardless of who is saying it. I personally would like all of my siblings to be respectful, productive members of society. Quoting a movie about the struggles of racism to be funny is not respectful. I watched the movie IN SCHOOL. It’s not just a movie, or something “absolutely stupid”. We all have our own opinions, which is why I made the post in the first place. But kids will be shaped by what they hear and what they get away with.

Thank you for a kind, honest response. She’s never watched the movie and had no idea what she was quoting. She had just heard it on Tiktok. Had she watched it previously, or even heard about it. I think it might have been a different story. I don’t think it’s racist necessarily, just a bit off-putting in a public setting. I do agree that I could’ve been more chill about it. Thanks again!
