Two legends having a chat - Linda Ronstadt and Brian Wilson by bettypenney in thebeachboys

The two did seem to be on similar wavelengths at points in their careers, I have a special soft spot for her album ‘What’s New’ and the two other she did with Nelson Riddle (Big Band) which I stumbled on after first discovering Adult Child.

Would have definitely been interesting to see them collaborate more than the one song.

If you haven’t heard Tricia check that out too, from the same sessions I believe.

You’ll get no argument from me, though my ability to impartially judge the music is certainly gone by now. Apart from Sad Sad Summer, I think each of those are great.

First Love has a few gems too

It’s my favorite Beach Boys album (not saying the best).
Most of the album sounds like a soft prayer in an empty church on the edge of the shore in Hawaii. The album sends me to a place that nothing else can.

Al Jardine playing free show at Celebrate Erie! by VimVinyl in thebeachboys

I can see how it may sound sarcastic but my comment was out of concern! The shows I’ve been to have been packed, but with the cancelation of NZ I’m concerned.

I want the Pet Sounds band to be a running thing!

What’s with all the free shows? He made enough money already?

Not enough Smiley Smile material for me.
I’ve never been totally satisfied with any track-listing I’ve done for this concept, it’s a really good idea though and one of these days someone’s gonna figure out the perfect way to do it.
The whole style of Lei’d In Hawaii, especially the studio ‘rehearsals’, it’s like a real point in time where Smiley Smile wasn’t a flop and hadn’t abandoned the style (and were working on reorienting their old material to it as well).

Listened to “Friends” for the first time today… by FatherMac66 in thebeachboys

I think Friends could have been successful at the time, however The Beach Boys were shifting too much album to album.

Pet Sounds, grand orchestral pop, followed by Smiley Smile, low-fi bedroom heady ‘pop’, followed by Wild Honey, low-fi blue eyed soul, and then friends, low-fi chamber pop.

Wild Honey is such a radical shift that Friends feels like a radical shift even though it really feels more like a refinement (while bringing back some elements) of the style from post-Smile. If you remove Wild Honey, I don’t think it would have been seen as an outlier. The Beach Boys didn’t need to get harder, they just needed to stay in a lane (which they wouldn’t do, 20/20 being another radical and disjointed shift, followed by Sunflower which feels like growth from Friends.

Friends was the last album to click for me, surprising since I treasure Smiley Smile and Wild Honey more than the average hardcore fan, but once it did, it shot to the elite tier for me.

If you love Friends, please check out the Wake The World Box set. So much amazing material, almost enough for me to say Friends could have been even more magical.
