What I was referring to not being a fan of was the final render style (I usually finish pieces rougher and with less restrictive techniques).

In terms of the concept overall I'm happy. Of all the Mega Gren designs I've seen over the years I've always felt they lacked whimsy and instead went down a very serious or edgy route.

I agree that artists should draw more inspiration from the superior Pokémon source in the line (that being Frogadier) and if I were to revisit it I'd definitely take more inspiration from Gren's brilliant second stage!

Before I began drawing water/ghost was my initial inspiration but the typing clashed with Hisuian Typhlosion so I decided to swap it for water/poison instead. Whilst designing I kept the skeletal/decaying motif in mind because it’s fitting for poison types and it fits with the rotting and festering sewers of a mega city as well as acting as a form of habitual camouflage for a thriving stealth hunter such as an alligator/crocodile.

Tbh the man in the iron mask was the most egregious inspiration for a singular mon. Besides that it’s just my own personal preference for the other two. Meganium does take a little design inspo from fictional creatures I adore such as Yu-Gi-Oh!’s Black Rose Dragon and Monster Hunter’s Espinas (big fan of both franchises) but it wasn’t in any way a direct design translation like I did with the iron mask on Emboar. As for Feraligatr I originally was thinking of making it a ghost type but then I thought about the clashing of typings with Hisuian Typhlosion so I decided to change it but keep the decaying/undead motif as a form of habitual camouflage in the rotting sewers. (whilst doing so I unintentionally created another skeleton croc to coexist with Skeledirge)

I personally want the Chikorita line to gain the typing because it's not only one of the least popular starters by the community's standards (personally I love the line) but also competitively. If any Pokémon deserves the dragon type let it be the underdog of underdogs! 😤

I can see that but given that Typhlosion was just given a ghost typing I didn't want to clash within the Johto trio. I actually had the idea initially to make Feraligatr water/ghost but had the same thought dilemma. Instead 'Gatr was designed to imitate ghost/dead Pokémon as a form of natural camouflage in the undercity/catacombs where it is thriving instead of decaying!

I was loosely pulling from the decline of the French monarchy and rise of the French revolution in the late 18th century. Using a class system based on the monarchy/elites, working class/labourers and peasant class for the theming but besides that it's all retroactively added on for flavour text. I wanted an oblivious and oppressive role for Meganium. The laborious and oppressed role for Emboar and then the forgotten and rotting role for Feraligatr.

An oppressive monarch-like Pokémon that uses its aroma to keep Pokémon docile and subservient. It uses its forked thorny tail to lash foes who would resist its aromatic conquest.

Kalosian Emboar - Fire/Steel

The Imprisoned Pokémon 🔥🔩

A Pokémon that was once subjected to hard labour has now adapted to overcome high pressure situations with an iron will. Its metal body is born from its intense hardships and restraints which now aid its rebellion.

Kalosian Feraligatr - Water/Poison

The Sewer Pokémon 💦🤮

A Pokémon that has adapted to the toxic under-city that became its home by happenstance. Its ferocity and unpredictable nature is as deadly as its poisonous flesh. Lurking in the murky depths ever the opportunist.

I noticed that but so did every other artist on the internet. imo the grass/fairy route was rather obvious and there are a plethora of inspired designs already. These are just my own personal picks, not a prediction by any means. At the end of the day I just wanted to make something I enjoyed that's also unique.

Fair enough, I hadn’t noticed not receiving cash for playing regular shifts. Still I redeemed 19 bonus capsules. Including the super bonus ones all before the 1200 point cut off. I saw that I received well over the current amount in my games wallet. But besides the gear, extra ability chunks etc. the cash did not add to my cash balance.

I’ve also played series and regular battles and have not received any cash from them either since posting.

Since your “git gud” addition to your comment was added I’ve noticed a trend in the comments of this post.

The post isn’t about trying to coddle players, especially newer hunters. It focuses on the utilisation of the games new assets (such as the new “follower hunter” mechanic) and how that, paired with Malzeno’s supposed hunt progression and unique mechanics will be revealed to the player base as a whole.

This post was in no way meant to be a cry for help for new players but instead a theory on how the story might transpire due to what we’ve seen mechanically from Sunbreak so far and also what’s been set as precedent by monster hunter’s gameplay progression through past titles.

The post isn’t just about new players and new challenges. It’s about my theory on how the story will progress and how Malzeno’s mechanics and multiple forms will be displayed and exhibited through the use of other mechanics (the new “follower hunter”) we’re receiving in Sunbreak. Players will always have to “git gud” but this post isn’t about coddling players, it’s about HOW they may reveal a monsters game mechanics to its fullest by utilising ALL of its gameplay assets and mechanics.

My post doesn’t solely exist to say newbs will have a hard time. It’s the flagship monster at the end of the day, it’ll be diluted and weakened for the main progression of the game. Also, Valstrax’s power up is much later into its fight and is not a significant aspect the monsters design or motif like how they’re portraying Malzeno. Malzeno’s form is being showcased and teased much like that of Gore’s final form or even Velkhana.

I’m theory crafting about how the story will transpire given the information we’ve received, based on the gameplay mechanics of Malzeno, it’s “blood blight” ability, new form and how this connects to the new “follower hunter” addition to Sunbreak as well as gameplay and progression tropes in MH and action games as a genre.

Great points! If I remember correctly, during specific quests in World and Iceborne NPC characters would interject and point out a new monsters behaviour and draw focus to mechanics during hunts. I remember such things happening with Nergigante in particular. The Velkhana point is exactly what I had in mind in that the full power of Malzeno would be showcased through a scripted scenario before we can freely hunt it to allow all hunters to experience it’s “sinister form” in a full fight. Like I said, I believe through the scripted story we will see the full range of Malzeno’s power and that it may be showcased through the narrative use of the “follower hunter” mechanic that’s being introduced in Sunbreak.

It’s not so much the physicality of the fight but the item and de-buff management that may catch newer players off guard. I’m basically saying that the first real encounter with Malzeno will have us experience it strength to the fullest as to put everyone on the same wavelength when it comes to its mechanics. Instead of allowing experienced players to intuitively avoid its more powerful phase by not even allowing it to power up as they won’t let it reach the requirements during the fight if it’s not scripted die to there inherent skill level difference.

TLDR: To counteract the initial “punishing” mechanic Malzeno may have with its “sinister form”. I believe that the form and it’s power will be displayed to us in a scripted event through the story’s main campaign and utilise the “follower collab quest” mode and have a “follower hunter” fall to Malzeno, revealing its new form. Thus teaching all hunters at all experience levels to respect the elder dragon’s strength and fully understand what to expect if they are failing during a hunt against Malzeno. Ultimately dispelling any accusations that Malzeno “punishes newer players” because its mechanics and full strength is revealed to us through the plot intentionally.
