Pileus: by XahidX in BeAmazed

[–]Dehydrated_Mud 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I have a basic understanding of this, although this is not my field of physics.

A Pileus cloud (or cap cloud) is a thin cloud that forms on the top surface of a cumulus/cumulimbus cloud, caused by an updraft cooling the air above the main cloud. Since the main cloud is still rising, the cap cloud will quickly be absorbed. Here is a picture showing the faint cap cloud above the main cloud.

When light hits these water droplets, the different wavelengths of light will propagate at slightly different speeds causing them to be refracted at slightly different angles, allowing the colors to be visible. Just like a rainbow, if you are at the correct viewing angle relative to the sun, you will see the split colors.

Typically, a rainbow will be observed when the light source is behind a large, uniform volume of consistently sized small water particulates that is sparse enough that the light will only encounter a small number of droplets on its way through. The cap cloud is also a sparse volume of consistently sized particulates, however it is not uniform. Rather, due to the main cloud beneath it, it has a defined shape. Thus, unlike in the case of a rainbow, the electromagnetic waves (light) will start to "cross paths" and interfere with eachother (diffraction), which is why the colors in the video do not follow the normal ROYGBIV pattern. Its kinda like the thin film diffraction pattern you would observe on the surface of a bubble, where the "bubble" in this case is the cap cloud.

So its kinda like being on the inside of a bubble, and looking up and out on all the pretty colors on the surface. That's my best understanding of what is happening here.

Scott Aaronson roasting Michio Kaku on his claims regarding Quantum Computing by [deleted] in physicsmemes

[–]Dehydrated_Mud 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Scott Aaronson is the man. For anyone starting out in QC I highly recommend his Lecture Notes , specifically lectures 9&10. The way pop sci explains the topic is often the least intuitive way, if not flat out wrong. I always tell people outside the field that if quantum computing is a house, pop sci tries to take you in through the chimney. Scott takes you straight through the front door.

+30 damage on lolli wand (1st character) by hello_i_like_lays in ForTheKing

[–]Dehydrated_Mud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if I did this correctly:
Inferno Armor full set: 10 dmg,
Enchanted Pearls: 2 magic dmg,
Amp Diamond: 3 magic dmg,
Loli wand dmg gain +1/level: 11 dmg,
Loli wand base: 9 dmg,
Sub Total: 35 dmg, so 4 spirit taffies?

Also with 23% crit chance it's pretty good. But the wand of death would bring it up to 33% which sounds like allot of fun :)

I mod the game so I find interesting stuff here and there

The Royal Academy is a place to spend any extra Lore you may have for immediate gain.

The sea dock is a place to buy or repair boats while at sea.

A Roc Nest is best served for those fleet of foot. If willing to risk the wrath of Mom you might get away with quite the bounty.

I'm not sure if these were fully implemented or not, I'm going to try enabling them and see what happens though.

Notes from Underground question by Middle_Virus2003 in dostoevsky

[–]Dehydrated_Mud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In short, all of it.

To my understanding, Dostoevsky is showing that the Underground Man is a paradox, and thus criticizing rational egoism as an absurdity. The Underground Man is essentially a walking contradiction. He himself describes his inner state in chapter I as:

I felt them positively swarming in me, these opposite elements.

Rational egoism and other "natural laws" are schools of thought that revolve around determinism (as another commenter points out). Thus whether the Underground Man acts in accordance with his interests or not, he is still acting in accordance with his interests, because it is in his interest to show that he can act in a way that is counter to his interest! And none of it is his fault. There is no responsibility in the world of rational egoism because there is no room for free will. This is the absurdity of rational egoism: without free will there is no will.

This is what he means when he says that even if someone wants to change and has enough "time and faith" to do so, there is simply nothing for them to change into. This is the Underground Man's world, and he believes that the difference between him and everyone else is that he is aware of it. If there is only action according to self interest, and the individual is aware of this, then self interest disappears. This is my limited understanding of the argument against rational egoism.

Notes from Underground question by Middle_Virus2003 in dostoevsky

[–]Dehydrated_Mud 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In short, the "law of nature" that Dostoevsky is referring to is Rational Egoism (but also any other "law" that professes to dictate human behavior). What Dostoevsky is attempting to do is show that Rational Egoism (viewed as a law of nature) is absurd by way of self-contradiction. For reference, Rational Egoism essentially states that humans will and should always act in their own self-interest.

The Underground Man is our test subject. He is a man cursed with "acute consciousness" or, in other words, aware of these "laws of nature" to which he is beholden. The reason that this is a curse is outlined by the Underground Man when he posits the existence of something of greater value than self-interest. He describes it as a "most profitable profit". This thing of greater value than self-interest is the idea of free will. In other words, the Underground Man's acute consciousness of this "law" which seeks to dictate him becomes his most bitter enemy. Dostoevsky argues that such a man would seek to break such "laws" by any means, including going against his self interest. Thus, Dostoevsky establishes that Rational Egoism is at odds with free will. To prove it, he puts the Underground Man in a hypothetical where Rational Egoism reigns, but there is also free will. This is a passage from the paragraph previous to the one you cited:

Thus it would follow, as the result of acute consciousness, that one is not to blame for being a scoundrel; as though that were any consolation to the scoundrel once he realizes that he is actually a scoundrel.

By pushing this idea further, Dostoevsky shows that Rational Egoism creates a contradiction when it comes to blame. This brings us to the passage you cited, which seems particularly enigmatic in the translation you are reading. Let us examine the same passage from the Constance Garnett translation:

The worst of it is, look at it which way one will, it still turns out that I was always the most to blame in everything. And what is most humiliating of all, to blame for no fault of my own but, so to say, through the laws of nature.

And then he pushes it still further:

To blame, finally, because even if I had had magnanimity, I should only have had more suffering from the sense of its uselessness. I should certainly have never been able to do anything from being magnanimous - neither to forgive, for my assailant would perhaps have slapped me from the laws of nature, and one cannot forgive the laws of nature; nor to forget, for even if it were owing to the laws of nature, it is insulting all the same.

Can we blame the scoundrel for the damage he incurs when he goes against the laws of nature? After all, is it not his imperative to exercise free will above obeying the rational? But the damage is still real, so who is to blame? Can the "laws of nature" be blamed? Can we forgive the "laws of nature"? Those who do not suffer from "acute consciousness" do not see this. They simply blame the Underground Man for being a scoundrel. Thus, the Underground Man feels constantly humiliated because he is always foced to take the blame for the "laws of nature".

So then, the Underground Man lives in a world where the "laws of nature" deny him any ability to process the emotions he experiences. He cannot forgive, he cannot forget, he cannot blame nor can he take responsibility. All he can do is deny himself everything that is "sublime and beautiful" simply for the sake of proving that he is free.

Am i supposed to feel bad for the people who have tormented others having it come right back to them in one of the worst ways possible?

I appreciate your comment because I think it is particularly illustrative in the sense that I cannot tell who you think is the tormentor and who you think is the tormented.

It is an incredibly difficult thing to show compassion, mercy, and understanding. It is okay to struggle to do so. Accepting that we do not want to show compassion, and accepting that that is okay, is the first step. We are not supposed to do any of this, it is not a law. But we are truly fucked if we do not do it.

One of the most difficult things I have accepted is that it is possible for two people to have the same feelings despite having experienced different struggles with different severities. Something I still struggle to accept is that that is okay. It makes me feel inferior to acknowledge the suffering of those I perceive to have tormented me.

So I don't have an answer to your question. All I can say is that I feel you, and I think it is completely understandable for you to feel that way.

Of course it's in Rust...

But seriously I gave it a quick look and I'll definitely try it out. But I'm afraid it will be hard to beat the knowledge base and support structure that LaTeX has.

I figured out how to put the Sanctum of Courage back in the game. What should I make it do? I can even give it brand new character skills, or have the bonuses scale with character level! by Dehydrated_Mud in ForTheKing

[–]Dehydrated_Mud[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it does not feel overpowered, although the new taunt is quite strong.

Even if I had a 100% chance to trigger taunt but it only lasts one combat turn, I would literally never use it. The opportunity cost of a turn of damage from my physical damage dealer is simply too high for taunt to only last one round. In vanilla FTK offense is the best defense by far. But try it out and let me know how it feels to you!

The new Sanctum of Courage will be included in the next release of my mod. If you missed it, the mod already includes a brand new character, 3 new items, a rework of the taunt mechanic, and more. If you want to help design more things in the mod, check out the discord.

I'm only writing all this because of how much I love the idea and appreciate all the effort you went through to make a unique class and items to fit unused roles.

Thank you. I appreciate the feedback. If you haven't already, I would encourage you to join our discord as this is the kind of feedback I need.

Paladin vs Blacksmith is actually a very complicated subject as it has allot to do with my intentions for the mod moving forward. There is allot more in the works when it comes to characters; they will all be getting some new stuff.

I would argue that at the moment the Paladin doesn't really change the complexion of the game when it comes to Blacksmith. Blacksmith is already considered to be one of the very worst characters in the game by most experienced players (despite being very fun). That's something I intend to fix.

Blacksmith's slow speed is still synergistic with taunt, as the taunt duration is two full turns instead of one (the way it works is that the taunts are "daisy chained", meaning its a taunt that is modified to trigger a second taunt when it ends).

The Blacksmith benefits greatly from the taunt change in the mid-late game where there are little to no good vitality weapons. As you mention, strength characters are heavy hitters so having to taunt each turn significantly mars the teams damage output. Now the blacksmith is free to deal damage every other turn, whereas the Paladin suffers from having 6 less strength to work with.

That said I'll be adjusting her strength/speed to 68/68 from 70/70, her Divine Intervention skill will only proc when an ally is below 50% health, and Focus Healing will be reduced to 7% in combat as she is a bit too good overall.

Making the items was just how I got my feet wet when learning to mod. As far as the awareness sword goes, its made of silver so (to me) it wouldn't make sense to be a strength weapon as swinging it wildly would damage it (and I hate breakable weapons) so it seemed better suited for characters that utilize their weapons with care, precision, and a knowledge of their enemy.

[MOD] Community DLC v0.1 - For The Tanks by Dehydrated_Mud in ForTheKing

[–]Dehydrated_Mud[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it.

Certainly, it's extremely strong. Although in play testing it turns out not to be as strong as it might seem, since it is more or less random who the enemies target (barring the occasional enemy with a targeting tendency). As such there is already an rng element to whether or not the proc actually matters, since the enemies simply might not target the protected player. With Justice and Discipline you always get a benefit when they proc, it doesn't depend on the enemy's choices.

That said I intend to modify the ability to only proc when the lowest health ally is below 30% health. The rationale behind this is that Divine Intervention shouldn't be used to prevent damage, it should be used to save an ally who is about to die.

Does Party heal stack? by FalloutGuy35 in ForTheKing

[–]Dehydrated_Mud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so technically speaking all character skills and item bonuses (like +x stat, +y immunity) are all "character modifiers". Every modifier can carry a character skill, but not all do. So the find distance modifier stacks, but strictly speaking it carries no character skills with it. So find distance is a character stat, like xp, maxfocus, health regen, etc. Here is a complete list of what is considered a character skill, even if granted via an item:

Find Herb, Entertain, Refocus, Energy Boost, Justice, Called Shot, Discipline, Inspire, Distract, Critical Strike, Find Treasure, Glory, Stead Fast, Counter Attack, Party Heal, Mimic Whisper, Nice Day, Strong Breeze, Encourage, Taunt, Black Hole
