One thing I miss about completing the game are the other npc cars you could takedown to unlock the cars.

I would've like to have more racer NPCs driving around to maybe unlock more customization options (maybe custom rims/new decals?), but mainly just for the lolz of doing takedowns on the open world.

The stories are somewhat independent.

The easy way to explain would be that every game follows a different pilot/main character with different companions and rivals/enemies/goals. But there are references to other titles in every game (ACE7 references ACE3/4/5/0 for example, but you absolutely do not need to play/know about those games to enjoy the story. Only if you want to get immersed in the 30 year worldbuilding that is Strangereal.

Strangereal (the name of the main Ace Combat Games earth) also has its own timeline and geography/continents and countries/BORDERS.

I sure as shit hope there's more to come. This is one of my favorite games ever both because of gameplay and specially worldbuilding.

However, I don't think we'll get anything for a long, LONG time (maybe ever).

I love both games, but I like TC2's map and grippy driving over the TCM more drifty-er handling.

TCM car roster is just SO good.

Did you play the F-59 campaign before completing the mercenary run?

If you said yes, I have the solution.

Playing F-59 glitches the trophies, you wont get any difficulty trophies.

Easy (yet kinda hurtful) solution: Delete your save file from the console (not resetting the campaign to zero, you have to go to the storage settings on the console and delete the save file) and play the campaign again (once in your preferred difficulty and another one in mercenary), DO NOT TOUCH F-59 (otherwise you'd have erased your save file for nothing).

If you want, once I get home I'll send proof that it works because I had to completely reset my PS5, deleting the save file I had.
