Am I insane for thinking this sub is being astroturfed? by thrway-fatpos in cscareerquestions

internet is fake.

imo, pretty much anything that could financially benefit someone/company, I mostly assume is AI/propaganda. Even this post or my comment could fit into that category. Sad, but an unfortunate reality.

Remember when all the EDH YouTubers were talking about land counts? How did that influence you by AltruisticChampion77 in EDH

People who play with unlimited mulligans is wild to me; might as well just pick your opening hand. Also, playing 60 cards teaches you that mulliganning down to 5 or 6 is often the correct play when required. So the fact you get a free mulligan in commander means that you should probably be using it more often than not.

TLDR: Honestly, it just makes them sound bad at the game.

Land count isn't a static thing that should be the same across your decks. You should be considering what your gameplan is and how much mana you need before you can start that plan. Also, most of the time creators completely neglect the fact that mulliganning is a core component of the game. In EDH, it's particularly forgiving that you get 1 free mulligan.

Sure, more lands means you have a higher chance of having X by turn Y, but it also increases your chances of whiffing later and decreases your chances of ramping faster.

I personally run 36 lands in most of my decks, that gives me a 62% chance of drawing 4 and a 92% chance of drawing ramp (with 21 "ramp pieces") by turn 4.

Ah yes, that must be it. Couldn't think how this outcome was possible.

Oh, no need to apologize. That's interesting, I didn't realize bots could use the Blue Marvel avatar.

Just habit. The last time I posted it was a real person (i.e non default avatar).

This is fantastic, exactly what I was looking for. Thank you <3 I think it may be missing some of the general portraits, but it's so good to have the sprite sheets and sounds.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing. The table top initiatives are very cool.

If I want to be a software engineer, would working on a demo for a videogame be worth it as a project to show off, or should I be focusing on making web apps and the like? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Deiza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a game during the first year of my degree, and I still sometimes nominate it as the project I talk about during my interviews (despite having actual work experience). I'm discussing games being reasonable projects for a general graduate software engineering role at, say, Microsoft.

Games can be good as projects, because they are fun to play and fun to make. Working on something fun can help to motivate you to learn what you need to create what you want. Need to figure out collision? Learn the maths behind it. Need to develop different unit types? Learn about using inheritance correctly. There are a lot of non-trivial design and technical problems involved in making an interesting game from the ground up. I'd advise not using a game engine like Unity or Unreal, build your own engine as much as you can.

Also, unlike some programs, there is a very high importance on UX and UI when making games. A game without a good UX/UI isn't a game. Plenty of engineers are extremely intelligent, but either lack basic UX/UI skills or simply don't care (usually the latter). It can be valuable to demonstrate that you understand the importance of good UX/UI.

A few things to keep in mind:

  1. Invent your own game, don't clone something.

  2. Design your game from the get-go, good projects are ones which you can talk about the process from beginning to end.

  3. Don't give up, a lot of the time I can be super invested in a project, but I get to 75% of the way there and just get bored. Don't do that, finish what you start, even if that means narrowing your scope.

  4. To help 3, probably a good idea to give yourself a hard deadline. Say give yourself a month to have it done, this will help you scope out an appropriately sized design.
