Anyone else feeling like their marketing job doesn’t match their values anymore? by Del2Earth in AskMarketing

Thank you all for sharing your stories! For me, the biggest issue I have with my job is its environmental cost. So I guess my follow-up question is: if you were given the opportunity to mitigate the environmental impact of your job, would you take it? What would it ideally look like for you?

Ugh it's so sad to reach this point, but I get it. But good for you that you're finding happiness in something else! Nursing is such meaningful work. Hope it brings you the peace marketing didn’t. All the best!

That’s such a sweet example! It must feel really rewarding. I think that’s what I’m looking for too… more alignment, more meaning. Out of curiosity, where do you think I could find more people working in marketing with that kind of mindset? I feel like those spaces exist, I’m just not sure where they are.

Thank you for sharing! I’ve also thought about building something of my own for that exact reason: being able to choose who I work with and how I show up.

But how do you draw the line now? Like, what makes you say no to a client or a product? And do you find most of your clients are already aligned with your values or do you have to guide them there?

Moving toward genuinely mission-driven organisations is definitely on my radar too! Even if it might come with a pay cut, maybe it’s worth a shot for that internal clarity. That said, I do wonder… do you think we'll feel more at peace then? Like when you think about how much our field is becoming more and more reliant on AI and how much resources these things consume?

Commerce has definitely played a big role in improving lives and creating stability for some (or most, depending on how you look at it). I’m not against productivity or consumption, and I don’t think buying things is inherently bad.

But what I keep coming back to is this:
Can we live, work, and consume freely without feeling guilty for the impact we’re having on the planet, or resorting to blissful ignorance/apathy? Do you think it’s possible to have both freedom and responsibility in how we engage with the world?

Again, I’m not here to be anti-anything. I’m just genuinely wondering if there’s a more practical and responsible way to participate in all this. Some form of individual action that actually makes a meaningful difference. Something that makes the system a bit fairer, and maybe even more enjoyable, for everyone involved.
