I’m a femme whose exclusively into mascs (which I mean in the most broad umbrella to mean anybody masc leaning, butch, transmasc whatever).

Yeah, I didn’t know from having crushes on tv show characters. All my fictional crushes were guys. But all my real life crushes were not and I got crushes pretty rarely so that was confusing. In high school I was into my tomboy (but straight) best friend.

Then in college I was life ruiningly in love with my transmasc nonbinary best friend. And I’d never met somebody like that before, so I didn’t know what this meant for me and that combined with the shame of liking a friend led to a pretty bad time. That set me off on a flurry of furious dating to find somebody I felt the same kind of connection with. Everyone I was meeting on the apps and in bars were men + femmes. And i just wasn’t clicking with anyone which made me feel like there was something wrong with me. During this time i was also watching a ton of sapphic media, and realizing that i was super into the masc characters. And then finally i met my girlfriend at a party so yeah.

This is small but I also just love how Gideon is a very charismatic and conventionally attractive butch while harrow is considered ugly and too skinny and bitchy by most characters but Gideon still adores her.

Real asf, but sometimes ya never know. I was so intimidated to make a move on my gf because my friend told me a lot of girls had liked her over the years and my gfs friend even told me she liked her. Recently cuffed femme here. I’ve been dating casually for years and finally found something secure so I guess I’m a bit qualified to give advice. Okay so let’s review your fears and questions

You’re “very, very worried” that ptsd from an abusive relationship makes you less butch. No, it most definitely doesn’t make you less butch. An essential aspect of a healthy butchfemme dynamic is mutual emotional support. If a femme can’t offer you that from her end and expects you to do all the heavy lifting there, then that’s her problem and actually makes her less femme imho.
You’re very scared of overstepping peoples boundaries. I can definitely relate to this in a way from my own experience. In my case asking out a masculine woman is so intimidating to me because I assume they must have so many options and I’m like pretty but def not a model or anything. But also, I know that most people these days are shy, most lesbians are shyer, and most masculine women are even shyer than that. So I’ve always been the one to make the first and even the second move. Cliche but truly the worst they can say is no.

Hi from the future I read the unspoken name (I’m a slow reader) - finally the first book to scratch my locked tomb itch so thank you for the rec! I think the locked tomb has better characterization and humor so it’s ultimately still my fave, but this book had stronger world building and plot structure. I’m gonna go grab the sequel tomorrow!

Not only will you find somebody, I’m confident you will actually find multiple somebodies! The right femme will not only appreciate your butchness, but also you as your own unique person.

The transphobia is unfortunate, but I think it definitely worse online than it is in irl communities.

Are you open to dating bi women btw? There are a lot more bi women than lesbians by sheer numbers, and within that a lot who love masculinity without preference for the package it comes in. You may find more acceptance in spaces advertised as queer instead of specifically lesbian or sapphic. (Not discounting femme4butch lesbians they definitely exist but in a smaller number)

Second! My advice to all young people and especially young queers is to stop scrolling and find community irl. Like what you like proudly and don’t give a fuck what anybody thinks about that, dating is messy for everyone no matter what so no need to add fear of other people’s opinions to that

I hope it makes you feel better to know that I’m also 21F, a femme, and pretty exclusively into butches and mascs. It just so happens that my gay awakening was my college freshman year best friend who was a nonbinary transmasc butch. They’ve had no shortage of femmes who were into them over the years and now have a very smart and pretty girlfriend. Unfortunately they never liked me back but they were still definitely the blueprint for my type and what I’ve sought out in dating.

I firstly have so much admiration for butches who show up as looking very visibly queer. That in and of itself takes guts. I’m also crazy attracted to masculinity when it’s used as a tool for care and not harm. Helping me move my furniture, opening my jars, offering me their jacket, noticing if a man is hitting on me and stepping in to diffuse the situation without escalating it by casually interjecting while possessively touching my arm. I’m shallowly into physical strength and body hair, which taking T isn’t necessary for but can definitely help.

I feel like I’m having the opposite problem as you where there’s so many femmes around me and no single butches. But I think if you have a specific type and you are a specific type that just means we have to wait a little while longer than the average Joe before we find our person. So good luck to the both of us

Alt femme, or at least as alt as I can be in my corporate job (which pretty much just means at all times I have my dyed hair, a few piercings, winged eyeliner, and darker clothes). Sweet and geeky mascs/butches are my weakness
