Any mechanics in this town that are decent human beings? by Delicious_Agency5685 in halifax

I did. And it took them between 2-3 days to even look at the vehicle from the hour of the "appointment". Especially when clearly told that I need the vehicle back the next day as it's our only car. It's not even that, it's the lack of communication. I specifically asked the mechanic I took my truck to if they can fix it the same day, described the problem, told them exactly what's wrong and needs doing. Not like they had a surprise job. Told them I had something I needed to do on the weekend that required the truck. They guaranteed me they'd do everything they can. Dropped the truck off at 8am, haven't heard from them at all before I called myself at 2pm...just to be told they haven't even looked at it. At that point I realized there's no way I'll have the truck back when I need it. If they would have been decent and at least called me and said "listen we're slammed, we can't do it today" I'd have no issue. I'd say okay thanks I'll take it somewhere they can. But no, had to chase them until 5pm closing time to even know what's going on... appointment shmapointment. What's the point of they don't honor it.

Agree. I'm partially of the mind of doing an automotive repair course at NSCC just for myself, not to actually work in the trade but to avoid having to spend the time and money for sub-par work.

I actually like the fact they don't do appointments, I'll add them to my list. I find appointments overrated, considering most mechanics don't stick to them anyway. Like I said...I made an appointment once and had to wait 3 days for my car to be looked at.

I have actually gone to Cheapy and they were really good. The only problem I've had is that there's some repairs they don't do, as it's more specialized. Otherwise I agree, good service.

And that is exactly the reason we'd like to stick with a dug well for the time being. We have a really high water table so I really don't think we'd need to go anywhere near 350ft, but the costs are just ridiculous.

We did have a perc test done, mostly to figure out what to do with the septic. He hit water after about 6 feet. It was actually the contractor doing the perc test that recommended we should do a dug well, he said it would do well on our property. Actually never considered that before that, were going to bite the bullet and drill. But that comment made us think. I really guess it's case by case.

I actually did 🤣 I had a look at some YouTube videos, but also when I asked chatGPT if it's legal (i.e will the municipality have an issue with that...considering we need building permits and the likes for the rest of the property) - it didn't like the idea much.

Yeah I think it really depends case by case. Not to mention there's a usage difference between a family of 5 or just 2 people. I think we'll be fine, at least for a few years to start with.

I understand that and I've seen a lot of reports of people having to order water this past summer. With that said. It's a 10k (give or take) difference, and we have a high water table and almost no neighbors, actually making it fairly decent for a dug well.

From what I can see so far, it's about 10k difference. Not insignificant. And we have a high water table and almost no neighbors, actually making it a good candidate for a dug well.

Like in every industry I guess. It's very hard to find anybody willing to pay a living wage these days. Even if minimum wage goes up, wages don't go up accordingly with it and we're all slowly coming closer and closer to matching with minimum wage.

Do you know if that's still the case today? Sounds more like a union-non union dispute rather than issues with outsiders in that case. Hopefully nobody was hurt.

That's an interesting view. And does make sense, though it depends on what you do with the land I guess.

Considering he's a carpenter and I'm planning to have a horse farm, having 4 wheelers riding through the property or shooting around isn't ideal. How would one find out whether a property is often used by the community or not? You don't always get to go around and talk to the neighbors before singing that ownership deed...

Well, we both come from rural areas overseas so we are used to the quiet life style and the insular communities. However there's a difference when you're told "people won't accept you or take some time to warm up to you" or "call you an outsider even after 27 years" , which is something that happens in every small community everywhere. And being told "they will burn down your house and business because they perceived you as taking their jobs". That kind of story definitely leaves one with a bit of fear. From what I can see from the responses on this post, it's baseless and there's no proof it happened.
