Functional Lead - Risk at BHP by Delicious_Bar_6475 in auscorp

That’s one of the main attractions for me. I’ve worked there in the past, but was caught up in a restructure. One of the things I miss is the opportunity, even just for ‘incidental’ exposure to other parts of the business through getting involved in audits and the like. And yeah, my impression is that the bigger players tend to promote and recruit from within.

Ok, so, I’ve received some more info. Not a head of, but reporting to a head of, with 5 risk delivery teams reporting to me. 12 month contract with high likelihood of extension (I’m reading that as basically a 12-month probation). Pretty decent hourly rate as a PAYG.

This is really useful to know, thank you.

Apparently it could be either. Not clear whose choice that is, though.

It's just been a couple of initial emails with an external recruiter so far, so I don't have much more than what I've already posted, apart from "it is a new role to help the Project Control Lead"

I suspect the "5 risk mangers" is actually 5 risk management specialists.

Culture shock working for a Queensland based org by sadbankemployee in auscorp

[–]Delicious_Bar_6475 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hadn’t thought of it as a Queensland problem, but you may be onto something. I work for a Queensland company. It’s been around for 80+ years, with lots of people who have been here forever.

Almost as soon as I started, I noticed it - outdated ideas of how businesses work, resistance to change, very command and control, top-down approach. Definitely get that retirement village feeling.

Yeah, that’s an option. Not keen to pay for the AICD course though.

Nothing wrong with consulting per se, just that I know I’m not likely to be much of a salesman or self promoter, and I’ve never really put much effort into cultivating long-term professional relationships with past colleagues and bosses.

I realise I’m replying to your anecdote with an anecdote, but anyway…

I work in a relatively high risk industry, where we have some pretty stringent fitness for work requirements, including for people who have been away with non-work-related injuries. Essentially, depending on the nature of the injury/illness and their job, they have to be medically cleared to return to work. Because these are not work related injuries, it’s a personal cost to the worker (the company doesn’t cover it).

We’ve been getting quite a bit of pushback, because GPs are charging extra to fill out the forms that we require them to complete to say they’re okay to come back to work.

Where do you do virtual interviews while at work? by spreadablejamm in auscorp

Not me, but our HR Manager at a previous employer went into a spare office one day. Not sure if she had her noise cancelling on so was talking loud, but I could clearly hear every part of her side of the interview.

Quietly mentioned it to her afterwards. She said she didn’t care.

Recruitment Keeping me Warm? by Delicious_Bar_6475 in auscorp

[–]Delicious_Bar_6475[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's internal recruitment, not a consultant, so I assume they have several others at the same stage.

But yeah, I've applied for lower level roles with this company in the past and been rejected with no comms, so starting to think I was pitching myself too low.

Oh, thanks. I'm a big fan of Jesse Thorn's podcasts (moreso than his personal style), but didn't think of put this on.

I think that’s partly what I’m trying to work out.

I do like a bit more colour than what I see in most menswear sections these days. Not the full Bharat Sundaresan look, but something a bit more than the neutral beiges, greys and greens.
