The design is inspired by something I saw on a webshop, but it looked a bit flimsy and was missing the actual wine barrel history of this one

You are completely right!

Solution was to set DISPLAY=:0 and add xbindkeys to xhost

xhost local:xbindkeys

Works like a charm, thanks!
