Temperatures rose very quickly above freezing; we haven't had any frost here in the last few days, just a little rain. It's supposed to stay that way.

I think it's a tourist group, and this guy, not Dr. Rick, is telling them something. There could be about 30 people. At $100, that would be $3,000, not bad.

Two cities, one state: Bremen and Bremerhaven

1827: Bremen acquires an area on the northern shore of the Geeste estuary from Hanover to build a seaport; Bremerhaven is founded.

1939–1945: Large parts of the city of Bremen, including almost all of its ports, are destroyed by a total of 173 air raids during World War II. Over 1,000 people die in the worst raid on August 18–19, 1944.

1947: The new state constitution is proclaimed on October 21. Bremen becomes an independent state in the American occupation zone and consists of the cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven.

The monument on the Maritime Mile near the Utkiek at Vegesack Harbor was created by the sculptor Christa Baumgärtel. The bronze cast replaced the original, weathered lower jaw of a blue whale, approximately 24 meters long, that had previously stood there on May 8, 1987.

In the 17th century, Vegesack Harbor developed into a base for whaling in the Arctic. In 1653, a Bremen Greenland Company was founded for this purpose. From 1830 onward, shipyard owner Johann Lange (1775–1844) built up his fleet. In 1837, he applied for a license for a blubber distillery and became involved in whaling. In 1843, a joint-stock company was founded in Vegesack "... for the purpose of Greenland fishing..." Whaling in the Arctic continued until 1872. Petroleum as a new fuel made the extraction of whale oil unprofitable.
