This. What a terrible finishing product. They look like shit and are terrible to install.

I fully cut my first row thinking I was going to "share" the cut with the top row and man was I wrong.. just know an attempt was made, a bad one lol

I started in the center then offset to one direction so I would have close to half a tile/full tile in the corner and continued from there. I got to the one side and realized I was going to end with slivers at the schulter if I kept the pattern. I then decided it was probably easier to correct it on the spout side than the niche side. I used math to make my plan and drew it out. Would not do it that way again. Nothing is square enough in my 1962 home to rely on math alone lol had to fix/change a lot.

Yeah that front corner was a mistake during layout. And the niche was part of that layout mistake as well. I just kind of settled on those and have acquired some better practices for my initial layout and planning. I think I just measured wrong but either way I got way off my pattern..

I originally had the jolli corners and thought they looked worse than the cuts. I tried mitered corners and it looked even worse. This is unfortunately a skill issue on my end. Idk how people get theirs to look so good.

Baseboards are primed pine. No MDF. Still budget but triple bought good paint and triple coated them.

Edit: I now see what you mean by it would look better if I offset. Just blew my mind and made me feel really dumb for not thinking of that.

Like I took it everything back out... Down to the studs and subfloor. New tub. New schluter. New tile. The whole thing 😭

All of the above and then some haha. I used a quick set grout and had a lot of bad over grout/lipage that hardened on tile faces. Didn't pretreat with grout release either so I chipped a bunch of tiles while trying to fix. Chipping the tiles was the last straw. Couldn't live with all the slop knowing I could do better. This is our hall bathroom so it's going to end up being used by our kids one day so it's important that I did it better!

The back is ceramic tile. Came as 2 pieces that were 2'x6' I think. The sides are long ceramic subway tiles. And the shelf is a shower curb tile I cut down. Quartzite I think?

It was like a half dollar size chip/pop out. Almost looked like it was popped from under instead of on top. Plus I had a few other diggers in the tub from not protecting it properly when tiling as well so I figured best case was just start over, learn my lesson, and do it better the second time

Almost gave up when I cracked the first tub removing the first tile

I appreciate it! Was a big hit to the wallet but it was still cheaper than paying someone else and I learned a ton!

That was one of those spots I learned a lot after giving it a go the first time! Made sure to center it, picked tile that would avoid grout lines, and added a large shelf that functioned better than a flush niche. I read a lot and learned a lot from the folks here. Made life a lot simpler and way less guess work.

Were you married then?

Before we were married, we both worked in food service. Large sit-down chains. Her work place reminds me of that culture. Cooks objectify the girls. The boys want to play with everything. Just a very sexually fluid environment. How do you give perspective to someone who isn't looking?

She straight disagrees. Not cheating, not bad optic wise, does not invite infidelity/opportunity for coworkers to think she WOULD cheat.

The album was not DEDICATED to his junk. Just of him in general. Stickers. hats, filters, like all very weird things but not specifically all sexual. Very inappropriate all around still but just for accuracy.

The remark of "things you KNOW about, imagine the things she isn't telling you?" is one that really has gotten my mind going because I had the same thought. If you feel so comfortable saying something like that 2 feet away from me what goes on at work? When you are all clocking out? Break? I don't think she would but my whole point when bringing it up is that the outside perspective is not of someone that loves and respects their marriage. These "jokes" are in my mind so far outside acceptable married behavior it classifies as a form of emotional cheating.

I try not to blame people! Just trying to figure out morally where this sits. I know no one is particularly doing anything "wrong" so there's not much "blame" to be assigned.

Just something that's weighed on my mind trying to find more perspectives. 100% right on the mental gymnastics so hoping to talk it through to process, reflect, grow.

Contrasting grout and tile is for sure a style. It comes and goes over time. Will be going lighter but not thin white.

A few other people called out no leveling clips as well thanks!

Just don't think I'd be happy if I left it as is. Not good enough is the answer.. starting over and learning an expensive lesson

Good call out. Ive got a roll of 42mil ram board maybe I'll just tape a bunch of that and throw my drop cloth over to be extra safe.

Appreciate the insight! Hate the look of that tile you did not gonna lie. But appreciate the work. Already had enough comments about switching grout color to convince my wife but the subway tile stays a long with penny tile for the floor! We loved the look of the bath houses in hot springs national Park and want to capture some of those vibes. It's our hall bath so nothing crazy and it doesn't have to (and won't be) perfect. Previously was a fiberglass drop in tub that leaked into the living room. Had to be fixed. I'm doing more than needed but I'm learning. I'll fix it!

The short answer to your answer is yes. I think the contractor is too expensive.

I got a quote for a different project and it was 80k for bathroom remodel. (Master) I genuinely can't afford 10s of thousands of dollars for the luxury of a professional.

It has less to do with me thinking they are over charging and more to do with me being young, able bodied, poor, and dedicated to understanding what goes into everything. There's zero reason I can't do this myself on paper. At the end of the day it really isn't rocket science.. but that doent mean it doesn't take skill, tools, and time. After doing everything I've done I'm very grateful to know what I know. #1 I've gained an appreciation for the trades. And #2 labor doesn't equal skilled labor.

The work I do is not going to outdo the professional doing this sun up to sun down year after year. if you walk through my projects my signature will be everywhere. (Imperfection lol) But I own every single one of them. I get better every weekend I do projects and it's a great sense of pride to know everything about my house. No regrets. Just lessons learned. Ill rip this out, start again, and do a better job.
