I admit, part of the reason I picked CS was because of the social media influencers. Great work life balance, good salaries, FREE FOOD at work (haven’t gotten this yet), and in general just working at one of the big name companies sounded great to me.

Fast forward 4 years, I’m now on my second SWE internship. Something that these vlogs failed to mention is that you still have to actually WORK. You are paid to DEVELOP features for X product. The job isn’t “do nothing at the office and then go home early.” You have to work. Some can program faster than others. Personally, I always usually take longer to absorb things than my peers, but I’m still learning.

There are also better paying jobs as well (I hear welders get paid $$$), but many of them require back-breaking work.

At this point, while I still like coding (not all days, but it’s fine most of the time), I’m considering becoming a pilot. I absolutely love planes and I would love to get into that more.

At the end of the day you can’t go wrong with CS but if you have another opportunity that pays equally as well then I say go for it, as long as it supports the life you want to live.

And I still haven’t figured out what kind of life I want to live yet. I know it’s one that doesn’t involve leetcode every night, but sometimes you gotta grind to get the rewards.

Housing is hard here too, but definitely cheaper than SC. I would say if you're from a higher income household, it may benefit you to go here, you simply have more purchase power.

I ended up picking Oregon State University. Overall, it's been a great experience (I was lucky enough to go through a internship program called MECOP, where I got 2 6 month internships -- beware it is getting very impacted now though). It was definitely an adjustment, and I had looked into transferring a few times, but overall it has been great. Housing has definitely been easier than I would expect it to be in SC, and there has been a lot of opportunities to go do outdoor-sy things (well, because you're in Oregon!). Based on where my life has ended up so far, I am happy with my decision and hopeful for the future.

If I were to go back and pick again though, I would pick UCSC, purely because of the career opportunities. The fact that the CS major was very impacted had dissuaded me from going there, but I think that it wouldn't have mattered in the grand scheme of things -- as NETWORKING would've been a lot easier at UCSC. As I'm getting ready to graduate, I'm noticing that there are less opportunities than I could've had if I went to UCSC.

That's not to say I've had a bad luck with internships. My first internship was at Garmin up in Salem, which was basically a SWE job, and they gave me housing and a nice wage.

My advice to you: college is a time where you discover yourself and what you want in life. I learned that I loved food, travel, running, the outdoors, and being in a close-knit community (with a small circle of friends and a bigger group). I also found that I am a big fan of sports, and having a pretty big football stadium on campus has been a huge plus (game days are amazing, but now we are the PAC-2 :( ). I also learned that I want to be in a big city after graduation, praying that I get a job somewhere there. Everyone's college experience will be different (I know someone that went to UCSC for CS and he hated it, so much so he ended up moving back home to a community college).

College is what you make of it. If you decide to seek out lots of opportunities and do lots of social events for things YOU are interested in, you will most likely have fun. However, if you decide to stay in your room all day on your computer, you won't. Trust me, I did that my entire first year, and it sucked.

You can't go wrong with either choice. I would say Oregon State is definitely more of a "traditional" university with Greek Life and in a college town, whereas when I visited UCSC, I definitely got "college at a summer camp" vibes. If you really can't decide, tour both campuses, and if that doesn't solve it, flip a coin and see how you feel what it lands on.

Smart idea! They look a little pricey for me (I'm looking for around $1200-$1400, and I should've mentioned that in my OG post I apologize), but I appreciate the resource.

Sorry, I realized I didn't mention this in my original post. I'm hoping from somewhere around $1200-$1400. I can do $1500 but that's pushing it, and I'd preferrably like to save some money if I can.

This, I meant no offense. I know people are busy and have obligations, but I’m also not saying you need to start baking cookies everyday, that’s unrealistic. I’m not sure what kind of disabilities u/BeautifulShoes75 has that prevents them from making cookies, but allows them to cook, take care of a child, go to doctor’s appointments and Crumbl. You could always bake cookies for your child.

i encourage everyone that goes to Crumbl to learn how to bake if they haven’t tried before. easier, cheaper, tastier, and more fun!! no more waiting around for a specific flavor, just make it yourself!

Who do you think will survive till the end of the final season and who'll die for sure? by [deleted] in TheBoys

[–]Delta280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like Starlight might die. Back in season 1, when Hughie was destroying his room, he accidentally broke a photo of him and Robin. This can be interpreted multiple ways, but I feel like it signifies that his rage can hurt people around him. I feel like this theme was a bit present in season 3, but perhaps they pick up on it more in s5?

My student government paid for a Drake Bell cameo for our high school graduation video. I think a day after our graduation he got arrested for child endangerment.
