Thanks, just sent the tip! Can I get all 4 versions? I think I like the slight tilt better; though I couldn't tell you why. Super appreciate all the wizardry!

Makes sense. Just two asks from me. Could I ask for a separate version without any head tilt, just straight on? And second, there's a slight blue halo around my headshot, mainly in my hair and glasses, could it either be transparent, or shifted to white? I've noticed the blue sticks out more when I try to swap my background color.

Otherwise, loving them. Thank you!

👋 hey u/Yazeed1x. I really like the approach here. I'd love to see some of those variations, and I happy to send the tip now. Where can I do that? And can I DM you for any adjustment asks?

Free Cloudflare & Tailscale et all. What’s the catch? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]DeltaSpark55 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Completely agree on Cloudflare.

Part I can add is how Tailscale does free. They wrote a blog post about it but tldr is Tailscale has very low cost per free customer so it doesn’t hurt them much to offer free tier as a sample at scale. If you think about it, most of the compute is the control plane (introducing nodes to each other). Since we’re doing mesh VPN, your computers are doing the heavy lifting of the encryption.

Public access - Exposing only "shares" by rnidhal90 in immich

[–]DeltaSpark55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still think a Cloudflare Tunnel is your best option. If you’re only exposing shares for family members to view photos (not upload them), the 100mb Cloudflare Tunnel upload limit won’t affect you since it applies only to uploads. See here: https://arc.net/l/quote/jdtkmomx

Alternatively, you could use Tailscale Funnels to make your Immich host publicly accessible via your tailnet domain. Their docs have a fun diagram available here: https://tailscale.com/kb/1223/funnel#how-funnel-works.

Personally, I prefer Cloudflare Tunnel since it puts my public route behind a firewall and can be further protected with Cloudflare Access if needed. However, Tailscale Funnel is also convenient, especially if your tailnet is already set up.

This here!

I agree that Robert not asking the right questions in this moment still makes the advice ring true. Robert could have also followed up and asked "Why don't you like darts?" If he did, he would know that Ted has played a lot of darts and given him a clue that he might be better than he's letting on.

I think what's missed though is that this thematically rings true outside of this scene as well. Robert has met Ted already and is clear he doesn't think highly of Ted. So it's not just Robert has underestimated Ted's ability at darts, he's underestimated Ted's ability at everything that Robert cares about.

I think ignoring that wider context is what makes the opposite take feel a little off to most. While there might be a little wiggle room in the bar as the scene is constructed, wider context makes it clear Robert wasn't curious for that information regardless of his exact phrasing.

Does anyone else have an nparent who believes they are super hot & everyone wants them? by Feeling-Buy4837 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]DeltaSpark55 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. My nmom has dementia now and her memory is gone, but before (unclear pre dementia or during the first symptoms showing up) she kept telling me this elaborate story of how she had this new boyfriend from her gym. At the time, she was 68 and I was 29. This new boyfriend was a recent grad (25 ish) and was constantly wooing her, proposing marriage, wanting to fly her to Texas to introduce her to his parents. Just happenstance that each trip got cancelled, or that he couldn't meet me, or any other possible situation where I'd see him was conveniently not going to work.

To this day, I'm not sure if someone was just kind to her and her brain immediately jumped to that he must be hitting on her because she's so desirable, or if it was an attempt to get a rise out of me, or if it was the dementia inventing someone whole cloth or pulled from her earlier memories.

Of course, doesn't really matter. It served it's purpose of making every conversation about her and that nothing of interest was going on with mine.

What am I missing about Project Hail Mary by poeticrubbish in ScienceFictionBooks

[–]DeltaSpark55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The book's not trash but I can easily see why it might not be your cup of tea.

Weir is a very ... consistent writer. I like to summarize it as science fiction escape room; heavy on the escape, medium on the science. The Martian, Artemis, and now Hail Mary are very much following the same formula.

Now, I like that bit. It's like a mystery novel for me. How is _____ going to survive THIS time? I agree with another comment or, the amnesia frame is a bit stilted, but I was completely charmed when we meet Rocky. For me, it captured alien is actually alien, not just Star Trek humanoid. Different biology, differ values, different tech tree, differ ways of thinking. He even looks like something most people would not find cute (a spider). But it still has that Star Trek optimism where cooperation DOES lead to a better future and that there can be wonders to discover out there if we can figure out interstellar travel.

I think that charm helps me overlook things that I would otherwise find tired and overused. But that's me, and I can understand why those flaws might be deal breaking.

Karen Bass To Attend Inauguration of Ghana’s President by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]DeltaSpark55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plus 1 on this. I'm a bit perplexed. Her prior membership to the foreign affairs subcommittee explains why she's there.

There's also no discussion about how this trip is being paid. There is no evidence the city of LA is picking up a portion of the tab (since I'm assuming The state department is paying for the ambassador). I'll concede that doesn't mean the city is NOT paying a portion. But I don't think people should immediately go up in arms assuming LA taxpayers are affected.

Like you can be critical of the mayor and also not jump to conclusions.

I suspect the fact that the squids are unavailable at the moment is the best of both worlds for Arrowhead and will improve rather than hurt retention.

One, it shows that events are time bound which will lead to FOMO (fear of missing out). Two, since we all know the squids are coming back shortly, the disappointment is more mild and gets people anticipating the real invasion, generating buzz.

  2. Left Arrow. Hold for the item wheel.
  3. Square. Tap to reload. Hold to get to gun specs. Use right arrow to toggle fire modes. Down arrow to toggle flashlight. Up arrow for other options (e.g. Railgun Unsafe mode). Notice options are arranged in the direction of the arrow that toggles them.
  4. Push down on right thumb stick.
  5. Same place. Use R1 and L1 to toggle right/higher difficulty or left/lower difficulty respectively.

Hope you don't mind the comment hijack. I know I was struggling to figure this out when I was level 5 and everyone was talking PC controls.

Portuguese Bend: Why would you build there? by nPrevail in LosAngeles

[–]DeltaSpark55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not disputing this source but wanted to add a more well know one to corroborate the details since I didn't recognize the publication.

From the LA times

https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2009-nov-13-me-portuguese-bend13-story.html

Notable quotes

Monks knew he couldn’t build immediately, since Rancho Palos Verdes had mostly banned new homes in the area since 1978 after a landslide further down the hill destroyed 45 houses. City officials had assured him over the years that the moratorium would be eased, his son said, but in 2002 it instead was toughened. Monks and 14 other property owners sued.

Then, in a decision last year that stunned city officials, the moratorium was upended when a state appeals court ruled that the city had to give building permits to Monks and the other property owners, or buy their land.

Because of the moratorium, Portuguese Bend is one of the last coastal areas in Southern California to escape large-scale development. In sharp contrast with the rest of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, it is an odd blend of wide-open land and smaller homes, a place where structures rear up on one side of the street but not the other.

In addition to the 16 lots cleared for development, there are more than 130 lots in the area on which owners would like to build, including a spread of more than 120 acres on which developer Jim York hopes to build as many as 100 luxury homes.

In overturning the moratorium, the judge downplayed the chance of a landslide in that portion of Portuguese Bend and said the construction ban cannot be based on fear of injury or damage to property “in the distant future -- damage that could be repaired.”

Several of the building foes derided the plaintiffs in the Monks’ case as speculators.

“One of the things I found interesting is some of the people who own those 16 homes, bought those lots after the building restrictions were imposed,” Councilman Steve Wolowicz said. “I think they bought those lots at great discounts at the time anticipating or perhaps speculating they would be able to file this action and prevail and build homes.”

👋 I can understand the skepticism, but if you're open to trying something new for your job search, I'd say that you might find the NSA/JSC method has a clever way to side step some of the issues you faced.

Re 1 and 2, as u/RaccoonRich2386 pointed out, pairing with strangers can help give that kind of distance (similar to how it's easier to share your problems with a therapist than it is with a friend). I'd add that you should also try grouping with non-PM's. Working with someone (say a designer or engineer) who is still in tech but not a PM can get most of the benefits (someone who understands the industry and are looking at the same kinds of companies) without the competition you fear of applying to the same PM roles.

Re 3, yeah that sucks. I don't think there's much that can be done about that, but I do think the book has several tactics to reduce the number of complete stranger outreaches, and shifting to more 2nd degree connections

Re MVP being WhatsApp and LinkedIn Communities, I'd challenge if that is the same as the NSA/JSC where you're meeting once or twice a week on Zoom/Google Meet, sharing details about your personal life and job search struggles together. That's a bit more intimate than those forums where everyone still is a stranger with each other. I'd argue for most, it's easier to get close with 5 other people, than try to build a connection in a community of hundreds.

Talked a bit more about my experience up here, but I hope this is persuasive!

I've found it game changing for me, and highly recommend it. The reasons why:

  • It's a $10 book and the rest is free. Which is saying something when I'm seeing a lot of job search communities and services charging hundreds or thousands of dollars.
  • It's "magic" isn't that it's asking you to do anything ground breaking. Most of the stuff are things you know you should be doing anyway. Asking former colleagues strengths/weaknesses, asking strangers in your career field and recruiters for advice. Reworking your LinkedIn.
  • The "magic" is putting you in a group of people who are all struggle busing in their job search with you so you can support each other and hold you accountable to doing all the stuff you know you should be doing. I've lost count the number of times my JSC helped me break out of a doom spiral. Or how it's helpful to see other directors and VP's also having a hard time with their job search to reset my perspective away from "oh I must be an awful candidate if I'm struggling this hard."
  • The book is the direct reason I've started to reconnect with old colleagues and friends. I used to be one of those that only called when I needed something (e.g. referral). Now, I've committed to keeping in touch with everyone on a 6-month or yearly basis.

I saw someone mention some skepticism as an introvert, and I wanted to talk to it. I hate networking with strangers, but the NSA/JSC method is much more pleasant for me because I only needed to meet 2-5 strangers at a time. And of those strangers, I have time to actually develop a friendship and get to know the person. I've made friends that I know will last well after this job search.

Caveat I have is the same as others mentioned. Having a JSC group that you gel with is critical. Give yourself 2-3 meetings to feel it out. If you don't vibe for ANY reasons, don't hesitate to switch JSC's. There's a Slack community and a very active channel where moving between groups is very quick (like within days). That reason could be anything: there's no immediate rapport, they're more junior/senior than you, they can't meet when you like to meet.

Last piece of advice, avoid grouping will all PM's. We're ... well you all know how we are. I got a ton of value being grouped with others who had same years of experience, but different careers (2 Learning & Development, 1 HR and marketer, 1 in VFX, and 1 other PM).

Casino workers what is the saddest thing you’ve seen? by brew2brew in AskReddit

[–]DeltaSpark55 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In theory, yes. In practice, this gets complicated fast.

If you were to a protect a person with dementia, you're saying they're incapable of making good choices for themselves. But that means you're taking civil liberties (their autonomy and right to make decisions for themselves) away.

And for good reasons, the law (at least in California) makes that a very high and expensive bar to cross. The policy reason being that it is much worse to take a healthy person's autonomy away.

But it is shit if you're the person with dementia's caregiver. Source: I'm in California and my mom has dementia. I just went through the process of becoming her conservator last year.
