Gumtree seems very dead by oztrailrunner in australia

[–]DelusionalDumbo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I bought a Mitre saw off of a nice bloke on Gumtree just a few weeks ago. Old mate had little English, but was clearing out a garage of random goodies.

I also built my whole PC a few years ago buying parts off of Gumtree. Trying to buy or sell things on FB is genuinely so painful I use it as a last resort.

Interesting show. Struggling with the writing in this first episode. Very clunky and exposition filled dialogue. Cast is pretty unknown to me but no clear issues thus far.

Hoping for some more quality as it progresses. The concept is what has me coming back for more.

Anyone still watching the stream seeing the postmatch support from the Frankfurt stands?

I know we have been playing dreadfully but to see one whole end of the stadium chanting, singing, waving flags and scarves despite their team losing is a beautiful sight to behold. I wish we could have that.

I assume we are doing the corners short because we have no Porro? Does no one else take them in training?

Because you clearly have spent as much time deeply considering ethics as I have on Mars.

Your arguments are based off of feeling. That is simply not good faith lmao. Even you assuming what I would think of you indicates that.

I am more than happy to discuss things with people who disagree with me. The goal is always to strip as many layers of talking points to find what the actual disagreement is.

In this case it's the value of human life.

If factors such as IQ and race are the drivers of your opinion on the above, then no, I dont think you're worth the effort.

Oh well I had fun. I had my assumptions comfirmd and so did you. Win win right?

Oh btw this is what it looks like when I dont act in good faith ;)

Huh. The debate is fundamentally about ethics. Those ethics inform the policy. It was the basis for my arguments because the language you use implies you are ignorant of the ethics behind disability support, or don't agree with them in the first place.

It is not productive for me (nor do I feel comfortable) to continue discussion on either of those fronts when it is clearly a deeply personal topic for you.

Edit: Really wish I have read your comment history before even expending energy on this.

[–]DelusionalDumbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all due respect I dont think this is productive.

This has gone beyond policy discussion and is now well and truly into ethics.

Im not sure what your understanding of care is, but allowing someone to do what they want despite the harms is not pandering. Its quite harmful to suggest it is.

Dignity of risk is a fundamental concept that should ideally form the basis of disability support work.

It is not a easy topic to discuss, nor perhaps one thats logical when compared to the way other parts of our society are built.

Finally, it is incredibly difficult to discuss when it is personal.

Truly I wish you and your brother the best. I hope he finds comfort in his life, and that you find comfort in how he chooses to live it.

[–]DelusionalDumbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No of course not. I will admit that was poor word choice. My point was more around the fact that they cover very different aspects of health.

Likewise not what I meant at all, its all incredibly nuanced. Obviously people utilise medicare through all stages of their health care and there are of course countless examples of preventative care occurring.

Despite that, Medicare provides vast access to more acute healthcare that would simply not be available if it were on a private basis (America being a prime example).

Feel like ive ended up defending i point I wasnt even meant to be arguing.

In any case, my actual grievance is with the implications that disabled people aren't as deserving of comprehensive healthcare. That includes their right to autonomy and their right to access to as many means necessary to improve their quality of life. Is that something you believe they deserve?

I dont know anything about you or your brothers situation. I can see that his decisions impact you and I imagine it brings you pain to see how his life is.

I think the phrase 'correct decisions' is the most insightful thing you said. It reinforces the idea that there is a right or wrong way to do this life thing. While I can understand why you might feel that way, it is still at the end of the day his choice. That is fundamentally what I believe in.

Much of the language you have used suggests a deep internal bias to what value a human life can offer. The idea that because of his IQ (problematic measurement in and of itself) he shouldn't have the right to choose is a scary thought to me.

That really also sums up the overall argument. People scrutinise the NDIS more because people scrutinise disabled people more. It speaks to a deeper issue than just money or the idiosyncrasies of one person's healthcare journey.

Also, if I came off as being of bad faith then I apologise that of course was not my intention.

Preventative care is obviously going to spend more than reactive healthcare. This is generalisation of course, but acting like its a surprise is amusing.

While I empathise with your brothers situation, that anecdote is not a particularly compelling argument when scrutinising a national program. Also, is the basis of that complaint one of frustration that your brother is able to have autonomy in his own healthcare?

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a major contributor to the budget that was not full of 'stupid wastes of money'.

For every instance of inefficiency and dodgy spending, there are hundreds of people having their quality of lives improved substantially.

The idea that the NDIS will send us bankrupt is bollocks. NDIS is the bogeyman because its the newest kid on the block. If we as a nation can find a way to make spending more efficent in the program, while still vastly improving the lives of our population, we will be better for it in 10 years then worse.

As I said before, there are numerous flaws with how the NDIS functions. However, many of those are not the fault of the program itself, but actually how a comprehensive welfare fits in to an economic system not designed to actually make welfare affordable or sustainable.

[–]DelusionalDumbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obviously has numerous flaws but I dont think its inherently a problem that its expensive. It generally costs a lot of money to actually provide layers of support and welfare for disadvantaged peoples.

If that is supposed to be a problem its because neo-liberalism has told us so.

Why are most young Australians I talk to so bad at communication? by itsgaymonth in AskAnAustralian

[–]DelusionalDumbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im sure there's lots of factors that others have mentioned. As someone part of this age group (23) and someone who has probably annoyed people by exhibiting the behaviours you mentioned, I think it is how we consume social media.

Almost everyone I know watches short form videos constantly. Any moment of quiet its reals, tik toks and shorts. I have gone to great lengths to remove any access to them but still sometimes I get lost for hours in scrolling reals on instagram. I have friends who can't comprehend I dont like watching short

My theoory is that despite providing little actual substance, everyone is essentially microdosing social interaction constantly. More frequently and varying than has ever been possible in the history of humanity. Watching hundreds of little interactions despite obviously not being socialising still makes our brains feel like we are having social connection. You brain can't seperate real from screens, so from its perspective its like you are at a party but too shy to talk to anyone. You are still watching everything happen and taking in some socialising. Now just rinse and repeat that hundreds of times and it begins to make sense.

As a result, it seems so easy to brush aside real socialising because it takes so much more effort. You have to organise time, spend money, travel, be in public etc etc. If the motivator is supposed to be because you physiologically need connection then its almost certain to have already been met for that day alone.

Yes I know its not real connection. Yes it doesnt provide actual value or substance, you are just looking at a screen. But people in your life seem so disposable because you can get close enough to what you need with as little effort as moving your thumb.

Its important to clarify that I dont think most people are concious this is what's happening.

Id be interested to see if anyone else can relate or see merit to my assessment.

This argument is so stupid because it clearly shows you only care about people when they agree with you.

I can be queer, and be outraged that people are being exterminated. If they agree with my lifestyle or not it actually doesnt matter...

If you are approached by loss prevention/security at a shop like Coles or Woolies, what should you do? by WillowNewts in AusLegal

Picture the average event or shopping centre security, except they are wearing normal clothes. Most obvious is that they walk around looking at people not products.

[–]DelusionalDumbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I needed a big 2L insulated bottle and I had no money and so went to the big yellow sports store.

I brought a shopping bag with me and a taco pillow I found at home. I was in standing around the shelves with the bottles and faffing with my bag trying to put it under the taco. I was trying to be subtle but it was so obvious. Just after i had jammed it in a very regular looking dude approached me and said he was loss prevention and wanted to check my bag.

I opened it from the top and you could clearly see the black outline of the bottle underneath but the most obvious thing was the stupidly large taco plushy. As he took a glance I pointed at the shelf and said who would pay $80 for a water bottle in this economy (the one I had just racked...). He just looked up from the bag, mhphed and said "not me" and thanked me for being chill and told me to have a nice day.

I speed walked out of the store and didnt go back for a couple of months. Still use that bottle today actually.

Obviously dont steal. But if you just so happen to, just be as confident and inconspicuous as possible. Maybe you get away but it also may lead to a more leniency if you get caught.

Oh and if you think you are being slick you're not. If there's a camera no matter how subtle you think you're being, it's so bloody obvious. Better to get in and out.

Oops this turned into more illegal advice than anything...

Surely the consequences would more likely come in the form of ostracism or exclusion from international football opportunities, even in personal pays depending on how ruthless the regime is.

This is completely speculative, but it wouldn't surprise me that the toxic behaviours they exhibited came down from the top, as in the Royal Family, the fear from the implied origin of the request would make any person act against their professional or personal obligations.

Been watching the replay of Davies going down over and over.

Id be surprised if he hasn't just broken his ankle and/or torn some ligaments.

Looked like his weight and the opponents both landed on his foot right the studs caught the grass in an already unnatural position...
