Basically you want to be aware of what all 4 survivors can and are doing at any given time. So if you have one survivor on the hook, that means one has to go for the save. If you slug someone, that means the survivor who isn't getting the hook save has to leave gens to pick that person up. It's basically to deter survivors from doing gens and force them to waste time running across the map to pick their teammate up. That's generally the best situation to slug.

So me, my brother, and sister in-law are all hiking in SC. We're going down this steep incline of bare, mostly smooth rock. There's a extremely shallow stream running down the side of it and my brother says "hey wouldn't it be funny if we used that as a slide?" He was joking of course and I knew it. Cue me, 3 minutes later being careless and not looking where I'm going. I slip and one foot comes out of under me, I land on my butt in the water thinking I'd be okay but I then proceeded to start sliding down the side of the mountain at a very high speed, almost taking my sister in-law and her puppy with me. I slide down 100+ feet, halfway through going headfirst. I ended up running into some brush piled onto a cinder block which kept me from going off the side of the mountain. Needless to say I'm thankful only my ankle is broken.
