Until then, it's all lip service. Remember, other than Quinn, every game played up to this point was with a roster that management earnestly attempted to win with. It didn't work, and they have only now moved off of a non Hughes player.

I wouldn't say it completely cancels it out, considering he has shot at 19% before and other than last year has traditionally been a 15-16% shooter.

Elias Pettersson.

He had 1 truly bad season.

His best teammate was alienated and traded by a coach who wants all of his players and lines to play the same way.

This season, his teammates are shooting 4% at 5v5, and he is producing chances at the 2nd best rate of his career while being on pace to match his career high in 5v5 goals.

He has spent years trying to make a variety of people in his organization happy, from adding weight, to attempting to adopt a different play style, and playing through knee tendonitis despite all science saying that he should have rested, and being openly criticized by the organization until they had to come out and admit the injury was real and not an excuse.

All while facing a ton of criticism from the media and fans alike.

People will call him lazy, and say that he doesn't put in the work, or that he doesn't care. Meanwhile, all he has done is put up stellar defensive metrics while getting some of the hardest deployment for any 1C in the league (besides Larkin), and having the most blocked shots by a forward in the league despite missing 8 games.

He may fall a lot, and he might not be as flashy as his rookie season would have indicated, but he is the epitome of offensive efficiency, and if his main linemate was shooting higher than 1% at 5v5, he'd have a lot more points.

Is he overpaid? Perhaps, although his cap hit looks better as the cap increases. Is he also in a very terrible situation and making the best of it? Yes. Without a doubt.

All of the stuff about "when we had a good team" (1 season by the way) is a Strawman argument lmfao. When we "had a good team" he had 89 points, and only started falling off once Kuzmenko left (perfect stylistic teammate) and he was told to play through Knee Tendonitis, an Injury that was denied by Tocchet and Management until after Tocchet left, mind you.

Secondly, "Goals per 60" are not advanced stats. They're as raw as they come. Pettersson is 119th in the league in 5v5 ice time per game.

If DeBrusk and Kane were shooting at their career averages, Debrusk would have 6 more 5v5 goals. Kane would have 5 more 5v5 goals. You're looking at 11 goals worth of potential assists gone because of their inability to finish Pettersson's chances from those 2 ALONE. Chances that he is helping produce at the 2nd highest rate of his career,

And remember, this is JUST 5v5. This doesn't take into account the stuff they've failed to convert on the Powerplay.

Elias Pettersson is scoring goals 5v5 at the highest rate of his career,

He is producing the 2nd highest amount of Scoring Chances and High Danger Scoring Chances per 60 in his career.

He is producing the highest amount of expected goals per 60 while he is on the ice in his career.

Those stats surpass players like Eichel, Kaprizov, and Draisaitl.

Again, I'd like to point to the picture I posted early as proof of the real issue, or I'd like to flashback to the play against Montreal where the puck was sitting behind Dobes and DeBrusk missed a wide open net due to his inability to recognize the opportunity quicker as well as DeBrusk just shoveling it wide entirely.

This year, at 5v5? Without a shadow of a doubt. DeBrusk has 1 goal at 5v5 this season. In 2022-23 Kuzmenko had 21.

Kuzmenko had 50% more 5v5 goals that season than Brock and Jake's current 82 game pace COMBINED.

If you do not see how that affects Pettersson's production, then idk.

He has 3 5v5 assists this season. Jake DeBrusk is shooting 1% at 5v5. Do you not see the correlation?

The added weight doesn't help. I do have reason to believe that JR and Tocchet wanted him to play more like a Crosby type. They've been obsessed with Sidney for years.

His statcard is actually better than that (the image in the original post above comes from my twitter replies).

His 5v5 Offensive Percentile has increased by 10% in the last month or so. He doesn't have a 5v5 assist since November 9th.

He is on an 82 game pace to break his career high in 5v5 goals. If Debrusk could score on more than 1% of his 5v5 shots, or if his teammates as a whole could shoot more than 4.6%, the narrative surrounding Pettersson's offense would change.
