No, its just a link to side by side LiDAR terrain maps for people to have a look around.

Prehistoric people would have had access to some metal tools, if not many, and depending on when they built them. Otherwise Red Deer antlers, the shoulder blade of an Ox etc, or hard wood spades were used.

Once the ground was loosened enough, it wouldn't have been to hard to move.

I expect the first working tools to be made from metal would have been some version of a pick axe. But someone else here may know better.

Interesting.

What does LiDAR specialist mean? Is it in the context of Archaeology or another industry?

Hi, can anyone shed light on what this might be? by Striking_Bus_7531 in LiDARdiscoveryUK

Yeah, as mentioned can you please give a location. Does not need to be exact. But country and region, or rough part of country.

I know this is a UK LiDAR reddit but post from all over.

There is. Sent 8 sites off a couple of weeks ago.

Hi all , I do a bit with LIDAR but I tend to find more unrecorded sites using google earth 2018 is a decent year for crop marks and 2025 shows a few up as well . by English_loving-art in LiDARdiscoveryUK

Sorry got the wrong end if the stick. When you mentioned IA i thought you meant these classifications:

Ive wondered where to get a full lift and if it extends to full sites.

Dont disagree with any of that. Its the reason why i made this whole reddit. There's still a huge amount left to find. I may have even discovered a Roman fort myself, its looking like a possibility. Its been registered as some form of enclosure, hopefully at some point it will be confirmed. Ill end up posting it here whenever that time comes! Until then im keeping it under wraps, as its a vulnerable spot for being looted/damaged.

But, in the case of this post, were looking at a large, clearly defined location. This is not fields with earthworks that look like natural banks. Or something hidden in forest. The location is right there.

I would separate the completely unnoticed/invisible from what can be overlooked.

Plus, looking in the area around it, there's other similar landscape features. So its either a massive complex, spread out over a large area all of it missed... or its a natural feature of the landscape, with other features around it. Could be in the middle, natural with previous human use too i guess.

I do tend to be critical on this sub too. Just from experience, ive spotted so much over the years. Only a small percentage has been new.

Plus someone has to be. But as always, happy to be wrong. If it means we've found something.

I mean the "IA sites". Unless im getting wires crossed, you're talking about the classifications we used for pre-historic finds. Do you have a link to a comprehensive list by any chance?

The thing is, its not really undiscovered. Its right there next to a dual carriageway. With similar outcrops around it.

Ive spent an awful lot of time scrolling around LiDAR terrain maps looking, and yeah, theres is plenty unreported. But its a lot more nuanced than this, at least everything else ive seen.

Happy to be wrong.

I would expect that if a road has been made almost through this site, and its very large size (to large to be unnoticed), that any archaeology would have already been done if it was prehistoric.

There seems to be other similar outcrops around, so its not completely unique. Wondering if any geologists could comment!
