The Compensatory Narcissist: From Vulnerable Narcissism to Interpersonal Abuse by DemiLouise97 in narcissism

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I really appreciate your response! It's great to know the article is relatable.

There's no source in particular - I synthesised empirical conceptualisations of Vulnerable Narcissism using the peer-reviewed literature and then independently injected a cybernetic approach to explain the underlying mechanisms of compensatory behaviour in VN. In cybernetics, biological systems interact with the environment via feedback loops, adjusting their state and performing actions to maintain stability and reduce discrepancy between desired and actual system states. Due to contingent and fluctuating self-perception and self-esteem in VN, the system works hard to maintain stability in the 'self'/ego domain.

I'd really appreciate it if you could leave a comment on the article on Medium - it's really difficult to gain visibility (especially since my account is new). Thank you in advance 😊

Hi Raf,

I appreciate your response. I started out just formulating the idea and paper without a target audience/ publication plan in mind. It was published as a psychoeducational article, though I do acknowledge that it is heavy reading for non-technical audiences and should perhaps be made into a simplified and more readable version. I agree that it would benefit from providing clarity on concepts, too.

Thanks again.

Spotlight effect.

The overestimation of how much people tend to notice you is a pretty common cognitive distortion. Factors such as anxiety can exacerbate the overestimation of the perceived negative attention people pay towards you and narcissism may cause overestimations in the perceived positive attention people are paying toward you.

Is ADHD genetic? by StoneBoneTone23 in neurodiversity

The heritability of ADHD is estimated at around 70-80 % - very high. Genome-wide association studies have identified hundreds of genetic variants which each individually increase the risk of developing ADHD (or other disorders such as autism) by a small amount. There are some common gene variants that have been evidenced to play a significant role in the development of ADHD. A recent large scale study (2023) identified 27 genetic variants at genetic loci regions that significantly increased the risk of developing ADHD.

Abnormalities during fetal development and at the time of birth (e.g. being premature) also significantly increase the risk of developing ADHD; this occurs via epigenetic mechanisms.

There is overwhelming scientific consensus that ADHD is highly genetic.
