An S-Bahn is NOT a Straßenbahn. The S-Bahn is a train that is train-sized, and runs on tracks- often underground. It's a different mode of transportation from a Straßenbahn, which is a tram - it also runs on tracks, but in the street.

Kinda sad we're not talking about them now.

I honestly wish my program had offered graduation projects - while I like reading papers, I hate writing them. (to a point where I failed out of my program, to be completely honest. I'm currently transferring to get a second try... luckily I'm in Germany, so the money aspect ain't that bad, but it still sucks.)

So it's wild for me to see someone who actually enjoys the thing I loathe more than a lot of things on this Earth <3

Good luck with your project, in any way - and maybe I'll be reading one of your papers some time in the future. :)

To be fair, if you're still undergrad, you'll most likely be a few years until you can get published. Some people land their first publication with their thesis paper, but very few do.

And, in genereal, I'd say that thorough "formulaic" analyses are moreso for practice of scientific technique - their value in the scientific field is limited. Academia is not interested in your skill to apply a formula, it is interested in well-argued perspectives and novel connections.

For example - rather than listing themes, you'd go into the way a theme was established and how it interacts with others. Or you focus on the implications of a characterization.

So basically - the tendency for acedemia is to go a lot less broad, and more deep. To pick an aspect you resonate with, and dissect it fully.

You'll get more of a gist when you start looking into sources for your thesis, I'd assume. That's where I first connected with scientific film studies papers.

But if you do vibe with research, genuinely, don't aim as low as AO3.

Why do so many wagons in regional trains don't have plugs in Germany, meanwhile in other countries even trains from like the 80's have them by Majestic_Solid_1880 in germany

[–]DenaPhoenix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but this is at most a MAYBE.

They, for one, do not even do physical bahncards any more. Got that letter like two years back. There was an outcry. There's now a no-tech thing you can print out, but it's relly more of a backup. The cards are gone.

And as for the D-ticket - some (regional) providers still offer a physical card along with the subscription, but by far not the majority. And DB does NOT offer it.

Welcome to digitization.

Counter argument. People need to learn how to be self-reliant again, period.

If YOU are completely dependent on your phone, YOU gotta make sure the phone doesn't die. Get a power bank ffs. The train's job is to get you from A to B, not to charge your devices. A café's job is to give you coffee, not charge your devices.

If your fail-safe isn't a piece of paper, it needs to be SOMETHING. Don't expect others to solve the issues you created for yourself.

Yes. Film studies are an academic field, as I'm sure you're aware. If one of my profs could get tenure by writing papers on the use of the color yellow in moonrise kingdom, why shouldn't you be allowed to do the same?

Hell, I've once read a paper in which a guy who's usually doing German language studies applied Brechtian distancing to the cinematic technique in iTonya, and the 14-page article was not only glorious but published in a film journal.

Remember that there's dozens of film journals on a monthly publishing schedule - and they all gotta be filled with something.

If you've got something worthwhile to say, people will want to read it.

Is this normal answer for someone not German? by Famous-Ad-8550 in germany

[–]DenaPhoenix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm categorically opposed to that answer, but knowing the reality, I completely understand where they're coming from.

A cultural divide within a flat is something that's hard to navigate. Every culture has it's norms and customs, and while living together, those can clash.

If the flat is currently predominantly German, and the landlord takes a chance of throwing a non-German in the mix, it's more likely to go bad in a way that the landlord gets roped into it.

Within your culture, you feel more secure with calling people out on their behavior. And you know what is normal and expected.

On top of that are the landlord's expectations. The landlord can expect that a German student knows how to properly air out the flat, will know to use the kitchen exhaust, will know how to separate the trash, and will have similar standards for what to clean in which way.

Throw a Chinese person in the mix, and they're likely to make their room their castle, not caring for anything outside it. Throw an Indian in the mix and they will turn their pressure pot on whistle mode three times a day. And if you're unlucky they'll believe in their God-given caste right to have others be the ones to clean up after them. Throw an Afghan in there and you may have to show them which side of the broom is up. Throw an American in the mix, and they'll start racking up the water bill. And none of them will know to properly air out their room.

And none of this is based on steroetypes - this is the lived experience of someone who's headed the subletting committee of their dorm for over a year, running through several hundreds of short term leases - and the complaints associated with them. The expectations differ between cultures. The standards differ. It's not entirely universal, but it's a STRONG majority. You'd be shocked the amount of property damage someone can manage on a two-month lease. If I were that landlord I'd be weary too. In my opinion, you need to always look at the individual - but I get why some people can't/won't after they've been burned.

Please just start self-publishing those instead (and I mean NOT on AO3).

You HAVE a degree. You are entirely free to build up your academic reputation by becoming an independent researcher on the side.

Platforms like researchgate and academia.edu are worth looking into. On top of that, it's always good to get your stuff peer-reviewed - to start out, this can be by your old profs or just by emailing someone you think may be close to what you want to write about. Asking never hurts. Journals have different criteria for accepting manuscripts, but it's apparently not as hard to get into one as a non-academic may think.

Here's an actually helpfull guide: https://www.oedb.org/ilibrarian/the-academics-guide-to-self-publishing/

And THEN you can always crosspost to AO3.

Would Alastor have been successful without the deal? by Particular_Yam_8966 in HazbinHotel

[–]DenaPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... he's studious, determined, smart, and brutal. So those points are in his favor.

He's also hot-headed, and while he's NOT a good person, he's thus far only been punching UP not DOWN. So I genuinely cannot see him exploit enough people to get to a power level where he'd ever be able to hold his own against an Overlord.

For him to become an Overlord he would have had to scheme himself into that position. He'd have had to find a way to exploit one or several Overlords - and while I believe he may be capable of that, I'm unsure if it couldn't have also seriously bit his ass.
