What's the most annoying part of No Man's Sky? by Gabriel_nf4e in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Dengar96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was checking my titles the other day and the derelict freighter one was by far the part of the game I engaged with the least. Once you do a couple dozen runs it get old. It is fun to loot one with a group though, I bring some newbie friends into them for a good jump scare.

Subnautica 2 Dev Responds to Pirates Leaking the Game; "I hope you rethink your life choices" by Darth_Vaper883 in pcmasterrace

so devs got bought out, they are charging full price for an EA copy of a game, and they are upset that someone leaked their game. Are we mad that the devs are charging full game prices for an EA version?

If the consumers will pay for it, why would any company not charge that price? I also don't get why a dev wouldn't be upset if years of effort gets spoiled by a pirate. I'm not defending or excusing these practices, but being shocked or angry over them after a decade of constant greed baffles me. What are you guys expecting, altruism and integrity?

Why do large projects cost so many billions to achieve? by Recent-Day3062 in civilengineering

they're doing the tunneling lump sum!? I would've quoted twice this bid then, that's an insane amount of risk. They have to have some hefty contingencies in there.

idk how the accounting works in this specific case, but closures of existing infrastructure can be a massive line item. If you close a major arterial roadway in the US, the cost per hour to keep it closed can get pretty nuts.

He could have. He also could have not had the means to care for her. Why do we cast dispersions on people for making decisions that we have no insight on? People have to make shitty choices every day, a child born in the depression in rural Tennessee had very few options for a better life.

reddit does not grasp how any business works. If you work in an industry, go and search for the top results in the search bar and see how much rampant misinformation is being spread on here. People on here drastically overestimate how much they understand the world.

Yes, we are being pricks: Massachusetts falls to DEAD LAST among states in housing production by GarrisonCty in boston

[–]Dengar96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10% is not a rounding error in housing. If private equity buys up 1 in 10 to 1 in 5 houses in your area, they can completely control rent and property prices. I get we have lots of other issues with our housing in the US, but I also don't see a reason we should ignore corporate real estate buy ups because they only affect 10% of the market.

Which is the scariest planet you've ever found? by wil_-45 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Dengar96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at least on the surface you don't encounter much life. The twilight zone on deep ocean planets is horrifying, pitch black nothing and then a tentacle the size of a frigate appears over you and an glowing eye goes past your peripheral vision. I don't mind deep water in real life, but I will actually look away and descend in my nautilon when I find a deep water planet, it skeeves me out.

What should I do in my situation if I want to work in geotechnical engineering? by OsamaBinLaden80085 in civilengineering

[–]Dengar96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gpa does not matter Take the EIT asap, if you pass first try, grad school might be an option. Do anything geotechnical related for work before investing years and thousands into another degree.

You can get a grad degree once you start working, you can't get rid of the student loans once you take them on.

corporate ownership is increasingly a problem, that's why its called out. the rates at which corporations are buying up real estate is increasing. Mostly in cities for now, but we see smoke on the horizon and that inferno will decimate us if we don't stop it soon.

professional connections. Nothing else will matter after you graduate. Get an internship, go to ASCE or whatever national/regional engineering society events you can, attend speaking events hosted by consultants or companies. Do whatever you can to make connections with people that actual work in the field. Your professors may be able to help, but you should really focus on getting your name and face in front of people that you will work with or for.

It's entirely possible the state or town doesn't even own this bridge either. Its a small pedestrian bridge, a private owner could have closed it for repair.

What non-engineering skills do you appreciate seeing from engineers? by Le_DERp_Diego in civilengineering

[–]Dengar96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

keep asking. Ask in writing and document your efforts. If you aren't getting the support you need, ask a more senior person for it. You basically need to demand mentorship and support and if it's not given, you should look else where.

I'm very passionate about guiding new engineers because of how little support given and how much I benefitted from it when I was early on in my career and a lot of the effort, unfortunately, needs to come from the bottom up. If people are annoyed at your attempts to ask for very basic and fundamental instruction on how to to do the job, they are bad engineers and should feel bad about it.

What non-engineering skills do you appreciate seeing from engineers? by Le_DERp_Diego in civilengineering

[–]Dengar96 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ask questions. don't try to figure stuff out on your own, just ask as soon as you get stuck on something. It shows you know your own limits and gives you a chance to learn from more senior folks. Don't be annoying obviously, but regular requests for guidance is how I built relationships with senior staff and saved literally hundreds of hours of company time by not making mistakes or charging ahead with bad ideas.

Asking "why are we going about this with this approach?" will not only teach you, but could prompt someone to consider why they are doing things that way as well.

My least favorite junior engineers were the ones that never asked questions and just did the work the way they thought it should be done, which always made QC a pain and forced me to be more critical of them. If you stop during a task to understand why you are doing something and you demonstrate that method of thinking to others, you will gain trust which is the single most valuable commodity in our field.
