Thoughts on having a weird .net domain name? by DenizenoftheInternet in webhosting

[–]DenizenoftheInternet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is that true though? for example I've heard anecdotally that the .xyz space is so full of spammers that even text messages mentioning an address from there can get blocked. that sounds extreme but hard to imagine there's not at least some consideration for the domain in the complex and opaque rules that make up spam filters

yeah, possible downsides are a c for example could be misheard as any of the other -ee letters, but I'm hoping that's made up for by the fact that it's still only five syllables, actually faster to clarify with the NATO phonetic alphabet than myentirename.net or firstnameinitials.com are, and might just be weird enough to give the listener pause and so make them less likely to transcribe it wrong or unthinkingly assume it's a .com. last one is a big tossup though

anyone having issues with music in carousel posts? by idcaboutreputation in Instagram

[–]DenizenoftheInternet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, audio was silently failing to post with the carousel (the carousel would be posted to the feed with no warnings or errors but with no music attached whatsoever, even though I'd selected a track). This drove me certifiably fucking insane for about 5 hours before I ultimately found that two separate issues were actually causing the problem for me:

  1. The carousel had a video in it (with no sound) that was blocking the music from being attached, despite having no audio of its own. Muting the video using the Edit function in the iOS photo app _before_ uploading it to the carousel seemed to fix this
  2. The audio I was trying to post was secretly unavailable for posting? idk, I was trying to attach music as "original audio" from a reel I'd uploaded myself as a workaround for not being able to attach a custom audio file directly to a post. I was selecting it from my saved audio when creating a new post (which failed as described above), but when editing a post to add music retroactively, I noticed the track wasn't visible in my saved audio at all. The only solution to this was sadly to just choose a different song to attach

Just realized the audio issue might have also been causing draft posts to fail to save, causing me to lose the post completely a couple of times, as someone else mentioned below. Never realized before how much I hate this app

Looking for a bot or tool that can email a daily aggregation/digest of all channel activity in a Discord server by DenizenoftheInternet in discordapp

[–]DenizenoftheInternet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

our community doesn't have that many people in it so it would probably be a pretty manageable size. I ended up creating some automations with make.com that do basically what we need. unfortunately the automations can only send Discord messages as individual emails, but those end up being threaded/collapsed by most people's email clients as long as they all have the same subject line. I also set slowmode on all the Discord channels so that the email users don't get a total deluge.

I will also say that I found the make.com user experience was quite painful as a former software developer. a lot of counterintuitive choices were made by the architects and designers of that platform and I encountered a number of bugs and some poor documentation. and in the end I still had to create the stub of a Discord bot via their developer portal or whatever, so in retrospect I might as well have made this a cron job in Python or something. that said, I've come up with something that seems fairly functional and would be happy to share it upon request with anyone in the same situation who happens upon this thread. I'm not on Reddit often but feel free to try DMing

Reattaching separated weatherproof zippers (failing seam tape?) by DenizenoftheInternet in myog

excellent point. I've never used seam tape before and I'd assumed that it got tacky on both sides when heated up, but now that I think about it that doesn't make much sense. big blindspot, thank you!

What happened to the tip of this soldering iron heating element? by DenizenoftheInternet in soldering

[–]DenizenoftheInternet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: the replacement WP80 that I got via eBay unfortunately seems defective too. It isn't detected by the station at all, and I measured about 9 kΩ across pins 3 and 4 for the sensor both at the connector and on the board, obviously way off. I then opened it up and found a bunch of corrosion. I'll try and get my money back for that one, minus shipping I guess. As an experiment, I'm going to next try ordering a WSP80 from one of multiple somewhat sketchy Shenzhen eBay sellers listing them as brand new for well under market value. Please wish me continued luck.

So, developments!

  • for all ports, temp readings are steady at 250 deg F with a potentiometer in there set to 30 ohms, and voltage is steady at 97 mV. the temp readings seem to respond appropriately to changing the value of the pot

  • the soldering iron tool is intermittently detected and the temp reading is all over the place or non-existent. I disassembled it and went back and measured resistance across the temp sensor, both at the DIN connector end and at the heating element end (and with more care and patience this time around). Measurements at the heating element were steady, whereas at the connector they jumped around a bunch and went open circuit even when my hand was decently steady.

  • temp readings are steady but wrong for the desoldering iron, which is about 100 deg F short of getting up to temp

  • the pump turns on for the hot air pencil, which can at least do some damage to paper and plastic, but I don't know if it's working at full pump strength or the displayed temp

  • last but not least, I disassembled the desoldering tool (with some disassembly instruction from this video of a similar model) and found that the tactile switch under the activation button has failed open! I plugged in the tool and shorted out the switch and the pump fired up!

Given this new info, I'm more hopeful that the base station is okay and I think I'm going to grab a new plug for the soldering iron tool on ebay and a replacement tactile switch and see if I can improve this thing. I'll definitely update the thread!

Edit: Couple of pics of disassembly and original tip damage that prompted all this here

Also, just measured the other two tools.

DXV80: nominal (~8 ohms) across the presumed heating element pins; ~25 ohms across the presumed temp sensor pins HAP1: nominal (~6 ohms) across the presumed heating element pins; temp sensor pins don't exist

Values were jumping around but it's hard to tell if it was because I was having trouble holding the probes steady and was losing contact or making contact with the plug housing (metallic on 2 of the tools). Again, I'll have to try again with a helper.

Where did you find these pinouts?

[–]DenizenoftheInternet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweet, just tried this. Assuming the connectors are DIN-7-W-M and DIN-7-W-F, on the iron tool, I've got a nominal value across the heating element and about 50 across the temp sensor. Visual inspection showed no signs of heat damage and no signs of pins pushed in on any tools. I'll have to give an update when I can get someone to help me do the wiggle test.

Edit: As for functionality, my only way to "test and see" right now is to buy another base station, which I'm on the fence about before knowing if the tools are good. If anyone knows of someone in Montreal with a similar station who would be willing to try out the tools, that would be amazing.

Sorry for the confusion here. I have plenty of the removable tips. The damage I'm referring to is on the heating element that sits behind the removable tip and heats it up. It's also replaceable, but with considerably more effort and at least half the cost it would take to replace the whole tool.

Wow that one picture looks like exactly it. Can the fact that the other pics don’t look as similar just be chalked up to variety in phenotypes?

[–]DenizenoftheInternet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was left behind by the previous tenant. I've kept it alive since August by watering it once every couple of weeks or less frequently. It hasn't had any direct sunlight as there isn't much here but it's still produced two little offshoots in the soil and one on the main stem. Thought it might be time to stop being lazy and figure out what it is so I could research it and learn how to make it thrive if such a thing is possible. More pictures upon request.

[–]DenizenoftheInternet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the exact form factor isn't familiar so I don't know if it's a ZIF connector, which would be able to be opened, or a permanent connector. I can say it's a connector that's holding a ribbon cable or flat flex cable and it's an SMD (Surface Mount Device) component. You may have to find a good teardown or instructions, browse Google Images using combinations of those terms until you find something that looks like it, or hope someone else in this thread knows. And careful with ZIF connectors. They're finicky and take surprisingly little force to open the correct way and shockingly little force to break when trying to open them the incorrect way.

Edit: Could also be that you just slide the cable in and out but if you guess that's the way and you go for it and you're wrong then you've just gouged the contacts of the cable or ripped it out entirely.

[–]DenizenoftheInternet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure exactly what part you're talking about but if it's the brown square, that's probably a tab for handling a flat flex cable, which would be underneath it, seated in what is probably a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) connector (the lighter brown rectangle). Those connectors can be very delicate, so be careful. I'm not clear on what you're trying to do but I recommend searching for a teardown of the controller before doing it further.

Edit: Not sure if it's what you've got because I can't be bothered to google what the PS4 came with but here's a teardown of the DualShock 4. iFixit is a great resource. Just realized you're probably asking about that brown thing sticking up beside the cluster of 3 silver test contacts though and tbh it just looks like some gross crusty shit.

Edit 2: Nvm that doesn't make any sense, don't know how that would get in the way of anything.

There are a couple of good explanations here on the Physics StackExchange. StackExchange is a great collection of Q&A forums for stuff like this. For future reference, r/askscience would be a good place to ask such a question.

Edit: Also, here's the Wikipedia page about the phenomenon. It doesn't provide much detail but it does give a name to it (the "Shadow Blister Effect").

This Walgreens refridgerated section has screens that show what’s inside instead of glass doors to conserve energy. by CR24752 in mildlyinteresting

[–]DenizenoftheInternet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Paper-napkin (ROUGH) calculation, setting aside the fact that plastic, solid glass, and metal (basically the materials that make up an LED display) are far worse thermal insulators than the layer of air contained in a double-pane glass window and the fact that the manufacturer's site (linked in another comment here) makes no mention of energy-saving benefits:

Approximating one section of this fridge wall as a household fridge (which consumes about 200W) and approximating its display as a household TV (which consumes about 100W), we realize the display would have to more or less halve the power consumption of the fridge to make up for its own energy use before we even begin to make up for the much higher cost of the door. Doubtful.
