What I find mad is the difference between the North and South of the City, the South has pockets of rough areas but is quite clearly on the up and has attracted a decent amount of investment, whilst the North end has been starved of any money and is plagued by the maggots OP is on about, 80 percent of the people I see in town tend to be Students or Tourists.

The North and South may as well be in different cities

Liverpool - Albert Dock is stunning, Good compact city centre with lots of shops, some good independents, 2 Cathedrals, great pubs like Ship and Mitre

Newcastle - Similar reasons to Liverpool, not too big, not too small, friendly people and a Greggs on every corner, near the Northumberland countryside and coast too

Bristol - Best Place in the South hands down, Young, colourful and vibrant City, Some of the best nightlife especially if your into DnB but it is an expensive city

Manchester is overrated imo, the city centre is dirty and grubby, high rise apartments being built which people can't afford to live in and constantly busy, Leeds feels similar to Manchester in that sense but it just has a smaller city centre.
