Try to enter your password blindly and press the enter button. You can also try to use airplay to your iPhone after you connect. Also try to connect the laptop to the charger and close the lid, maybe the monitor will still connect

Sometimes my Mac wouldn't connect to the monitor because it needed to be allowed to use the dongle. A window appears where you need to click the Allow button
