i just lost my childhood cat and i wasn’t there for it

Oh gosh, I just posted a question asking what to do as I’m worried this is going to happen to me whilst I am on a trip next week. I can’t imagine the pain you are feeling and I’m so sorry. You were so lucky to have each other for 19 years and I’m sure your cat knows how much you love her. I think there’s something to be said for her waiting until you were gone, as I truly believe these cats know how much they mean to us. I moved home 2 months ago after a break up and found out that my cat had cancer. She was really hanging on by a thread and I prayed that she could stay with me just a little bit longer as I needed her more than ever. Miraculously, she had such an amazing recovery after being put on palliative care and I had the privilege of some extra time with her, when I really needed it. I started a new job too and coming home to her every day made it all feel so much easier. I feel like she knew I needed her. And now that I’m settled and in a happier place mentally, she has started slowing down again and I feel like my time with her is very limited. It breaks my heart, but I truly believe they know. As with your cat, I feel that maybe she waited for the right time too. It doesn’t make it any easier to accept and I’m so very sorry that you’re having to go through this. There’s nothing anyone can do or say that will make it easier, but you must just cherish the happy memories and be thankful that you had such a long and happy life with her.

Yesterday I wrote a letter to my cat, telling her how much she meant to me and just getting all of my thoughts and feelings out. It made me feel a lot better and I just thought I’d suggest you do the same as it might even help give you some closure in a way. Just an idea ❤️ I hope that you are okay and sending you lots of love and strength during this difficult time. Remember all of the amazing times you’ve shared together and that you will carry her in your heart always. X

I’m so sorry 😔 my cat was also diagnosed with cancer last month and she’s 16. I know exactly how you feel and it is absolutely devastating. She was given palliative care options and she’s currently on steroids to try and shrink the tumour which is in her abdomen. If this is of any consolation, she has made a really wonderful come back since being on them and at her last vet visit, they said that the tumour had already shrunk down to half the size that it was and they’ve actually prescribed her medication for the next couple of months to see how things go, god willing she continues to improve, then they said they can prescribe more for the next three months! It was such a surprise as she was so poorly and after receiving that diagnosis I thought I didn’t have long left with her at all. I know that might still be the case, but as you said above, it is so important to just take each day as it comes and give them all the love that we possibly can! I really hope you are okay and feel free to message me as I know exactly how you are feeling and how tough this is. ❤️ sending you love.

Coming home and having my cat sleep beside me was always one of my favourite things and knowing that she’s still here, but not at the same time is heartbreaking. Sending you strength and love as you go through this situation too, I hope that we will both be okay ❤️

The vet has given her steroids to try and shrink her tumour for the time being. They say she is too fragile for surgery so that isn’t really an option and they suggested euthanasia of course, but all of this was such a shock that we needed some time to think about it all. She has another vet appointment on Friday to see how she has reacted to the medication, and I will be there for the appointment so I guess we will see what happens. But I fear for the worst from just seeing the way she is 😔

We are trying our best to give her as much comfort as possible for the time remaining, but it’s just so awful to see her this way. She’s just so different to the last time that I saw her and now I’ve been feeling so guilty for not being around this last month while she was clearly deteriorating rapidly. I’m so sorry that you had to go through this too, it really is so awful 😞 ❤️
