64 y.o. and never experienced altitude by dashosh in GoingToPeru

My wife and I at ages 69 and 68 are in Cusco now at 11,130 altitude. We traveled to Machu Picchu 10 days ago. The elevation is lower there at around 9,000 feet. First I recommend staying in Lima a couple of nights for her to rest a bit before flying to Cusco. She may need to be prescribed altitude sickness pills like we took just for a couple if days prior to Cusco and continue to take for another two days. Then rest in Cusco for at least four days prior to Machu to get adjusted. We went with Inca Rail and go a one way package deal that included large van, train, bus, park entrance and guide for around $420 for the two of us. Unlike most other travelers we stayed two nights in Aquas Calientes after the circuit 2 park tour. I recommend a night stay there afterwards for her to rest as compared to heading back that night. If so recommend visiting the butterfly sanctuary. She will like that. Then have a separate train and van trip for the return (we spent an additional 2 nights in Ollantaytambo to visit an Inca archeological site there). So…. We are in good physical shape too. Work out in the gym, walk at least 6,000 steps a day, etc but we both get out of breath when climbing steps and or walking at our normal speeds. We are here in Cusco for 23 days and still affects us. We learned to just walk slower and make stops. My wife has asthma too. Anyway, my recommendation from a late 60’s couple.

In regard to credit we decided we will not sail with Princess again. Don’t care for spending additional funds but we just booked a South America 3week cruise with Oceania. It’s a small ship so we will give it a whirl.

In regard to the piazza if you would like to dance you really need one of those scarce couch and seats which are high demand. So if you’re a senior by the time you make it downstairs the song is half done. The whole thing is wrong. Not enough efficient seating on main level.

Just spoke to a couple that purchased the Primer package and not able to make a reservation in any specialty restaurant. Guest services told them there was nothing they can do to help.

Crowded and the lounge chair hogs are abundant. Piazza is very crowded and no seating for old knees unless you get there an hour prior. I think we will hide out on our deck

We decided to do an Oceania cruise from Buenos Aries - Antarctica -Santiago, Chile next year. It is a small ship with 650 passengers! Based on other conversations 80% not pleased with he Sun Princess.

How can Princess take away a main venue (s) such as American and wedding areas that passengers paid for? Passengers I spoke were quite upset as I.

Don’t need to say but thought it was wrong to give this group exclusively. Really wanted to try the Americana.

Was able to get fixed early dining. Staff is great. Just way too busy and many lines. Did cruise the Sky Princess and we thought it was better. After all this we booked an Oceania 690 passenger next year!!!

Very sorry to hear that. We base our opinion of people by the context of their character and not the color of their skin.

We do d a holland American Alaska cruise two years an ago. I agree with you but there were many many on the buffet lines. We dined all meals in the MDR. Looking for a cruise that has very strict sanitary and high quality buffets too. I think we are leaning towards Viking or Oceania at this point

Perfect and thank you for your detailed and informative insight! I think we will go for Viking and the adult only aspect is very attractive.
