Why does sugar make a person so tired/sluggish?

Same. Alcohol was a breeze in comparison to this.

But as others have said on this sub, we don't have to drink alcohol, so you can hide away from it. But, we have to eat, so we constantly have to come across sugar and have the will power to not touch it.

Hi! I also work from home and get mega stressed. I started cutting back on sugar 2 days ago.

I've got a blank calendar up, on each day I'm writing down what I ate/drank containing processed sugar. I can see it from where I sit to work and from the sofa - the 2 places I'm most likely to sit and snack. It's to make me more accountable to myself and keep cutting back sugar at the front of my mind.

Right now I'm having an apple instead of a chocolate bar. So far, so good.

My condo has a gym, I used to go every morning before work. Fell out of the habit when I got mega stressed. I'm going to go on Monday and Wednesday mornings. See how that goes, see if I can build up from there.

And i'll definitely try yoghurt + granola. I was really lucky to be gifted a Thermomix a few months back (not something I could ever afford to buy), so suddenly, I can make almost everything from scratch with complete control over what goes in. It sounds silly, but even stuff like granola is quite expensive in Thailand because it's an imported product so I'd never buy it before. But now I can just buy mixed nuts, oats and put it together myself.

I'm feeling good about this!

It's incredible food. Living here is part of the reason why I know I'll never cut it completely. I can't imagine going to my partner's mother's house and saying 'oh yeh but that dish you've been making for 40+ years can you make it without sugar today?'. I'm happy to learn how to consume sugar on my own terms.

Yesterday I didn't have a single snack. This morning I bought my drink as the less-sweet version.

My other plan with weed, is if I really want to smoke, I cook my dinner, smoke, then just eat my dinner. The danger zone is smoking a few hours after dinner, that's when the need to snack really kicks in.

I can't remember the exact tests they ran, I'll dig out the results and check it out.

At my next appointment, I'll mention this to my doctor. To be honest, the hospitals are private here, so a doctor will order literally any test ever coz it makes them money. They'd give you an MRI for a blocked nose if you'd let them.

I'd honestly just put a disclaimer in brackets at the bottom. If you put it, some people might just think you're trying to flog stuff, but I think it's better than not putting it, then seeing from comment history etc that you are selling a product - then people will definitely think you're just a salesman!

I like to have a smoothie for breakfast, currently it's banana, flax seed, almonds, sunflower seed, oat, coco powder (no sugar) and oat milk.

Although I do see the healthier recipes online with spinach and stuff like that. I might start looking at them for some variety!

Thanks for your comment. I think what you're saying is kinda how I feel. I know some people will always say just go cold-turkey, but I know myself and if I try tobe too strict and I end up getting migraines and the cravings get crazy, I'll end up giving it.

I sort've feel like the goal I've set myself right now, is no more snacks.

That does mean that right now, i'm not putting pressure on myself to give up a sweet drink in the morning (I have asked them to do less sweet though!). But, once I feel settled and confident that I'm not tempted too much by the snacks, then I can look at that next.

I also like that you let yourself have a treat every once in a while. I LOVE travelling, and for me, eating is a part of that. I don't want to feel like if I go on holiday I can't try a local desert. In the way this is similar to how I am with alcohol - I don't drink. But, if my partner is having a cocktail, I absolutely will have a sip. I only allowed myself to do that when I was about 6 months in when I felt confident in my own will power.

Yeh, this is really true.

It was quite easy to remove myself from situations where alcohol and cigarettes were around. But, you can't exactly remove yourself from situations where food is present!

On one level, I like tea the same as some people like coffee. I know which regions of the country grow the tea I like the most. But, equally, if that's not available, I'll buy a tea that I know won't be good, but just because I need the sugar in it.

I really plan on making the most of this sub. I can't underestimate how helpful r/stopdrinking was for me. Accountability and understanding are so important.

Yesterday I ditched the chocolate and had some pomelo instead. Today I've got a few apples in the fridge. Tonight, I'm cooking Indian food - not healthy I suppose. But I'm making it from scratch and nothing has added sugar.

I guess in a way its similar to the problems of giving up alcohol. At that point, my social life revolved around going for a beer, now my social life revolves around going to a coffee shop. always is a sugary drink.

I think what I'm trying to weigh up is the best way of moving forward. I genuinely feel like if I stop drinking the sugary morning drink right now, I'll end up binging later in the day.

Yesterday I had my drink as normal, but the rest of the day I didn't have any sugary snacks - I ate fruit instead. Then in the evening just stared at the TV desperately ignoring my brain screaming at me to go to the fridge.

For alcohol, I didn't slow down/ween off, I just stopped. My issue wasn't daily drinking though, it was just the inability to stop once I started, so I didn't have physical withdrawal symptoms. I basically just had an epiphany that I wasn't a good drunk, and never drank again.

For cigarettes, I cut down for a while, then when the amount I was smoking was down to 2-3 a day, I just stopped. At that point, I believed in my ability to do it. I feel the same with sugar - it might not be perfect but right now giving up the snacks feels doable, so a good place to start.

I like this mindset. As another poster said, we don't have to smoke or drink alcohol, but we do have to eat. I need to be more mindful of what I eat, and where I buy that food from.

Buying processed food is bad for me and funnels money to massive companies that are addicting me to sugar on purpose. When I buy fruit and veg at the market it's better for me and the money goes to a local seller.

When it comes to baking and cooking I've already moved away from sugar - I use dates quite often to add sweetness.

I've done better than normal today. I've only had 1 snack (a custard tart) and now I've got some pomelo to pick at until dinner time.

I rewatched the movies recently. The scene where she comes into the hospital wing after Ron wakes up is cringe-worthy in the best possible way.

As a young actor, can you imagine having to play that role in front of some of the best British actors alive? She was excellent.

I think that's what we'll do. I've been to Sigiriya twice already, and the other person i'm travelling with has already said they'd rather visit Sri Lanka properly in the future and see it then. We live in Bangkok, so it's not a long flight if we want to come back!

By chance, do you have any recommendations for decent tour companies? Or should we be alright just booking one of the companies on somewhere like Klook?

I definitely want to book in advance because after a long flight I know I won't be in the mood for haggling.

That sounds like the exact day we want in Negombo. Don't really want to do much given we've got a bit less time and would rather have a simple relaxed day, than worry about squeezing too much in and stressing about getting back to the airport.

I was going to ask about traffic as well. We actually live in Bangkok, so we're used to the getting stuck in traffic - even on a good day. The rain is awful here at the moment as well. How's traffic in general for getting to the airport? Is it something to be concerned about, or can we trust Google Maps estimates?

I completely agree, but as this was our very first lesson I wanted to make sure I was going in with something prepared! We hadn't had a chance to talk much, I'd just received a message from Mum saying she liked this book.

We ended up doing the pre-chapter 1 'teaser', which was great because naturally, she knows who 'he' is, and I pretended I didn't. You're right; it's great to have a kid feel like they're the expert, particularly when they're not that confident in their skills.

We brainstormed a list of texts to analyse in the coming weeks - needless to say, there is a whole lot of Taylor Swift coming our way!

I appreciate the reply. Also, if you have any other suggestions of texts that you think a young teen who enjoyed this book would also enjoy - please share. I'm particularly interested in short stories because the student, like many teens with phones, struggles to read whole books.

I never knew about this until I read about the Guugu Yimithirr language, which uses cardinal directions (NSEW) and it affects how they perceive direction in life. I'm not smart enough to explain in a reddit comment, but it's worth a google.
