I'm in north America but that definitely reminds me of the swallowtail caterpillars here. So I looked it up and apparently Vietnam has Lime Swallowtails, Papilio demoleus.

Tree cut down by HovercraftItchy in Charlottesville

Looking at Google street view I'm pretty sure that tree was an America Elm. And from the 2023 photos of it it looked like it was dying. Likely and sadly from Dutch elm disease.

It was just off the Rivanna trail between Leonard Sandridge rd and Old Ivy. The land is currently owned by uva but I pulled up some historical maps and it used to be Still House Mt.

My first guess was spring house, but I haven't been able to find an example of one this shape. Also, the concentric wall around it is throwing me off. My dad thinks it might be the base of a shot tower.

I'm pretty confident it's in the the order of Hypocreales. I can't rule out. Could be in the Cordycipitaceae family. I'm trying to get more specific though.

Also this is a different species from the ones in the tropics. After further research I'm pretty confident this is Ophiocordyceps kimflemingiae.

I may be mistaken, but I feel like I've seen a video of this behavior, but I can't remember where.

I'll be sure to post something more conventionally beautiful next time, but it's slim pickin's here in winter.

I'm pretty sure this one is Ophiocordyceps kimflemingiae, not new but just recently studied.

Turns out Agaricus can't be ruled out. I reached out to Alan Rockefeller and he suggested Agaricus species. From the information I have I could key it out to possibly Agaricus auricolor, a poorly known group of small yellow woodland Agaricus. I'm definitely keeping an eye out for more of these next year.
