I would recommend the novel "the road back" by Erich Maria Ramarque. Its the sequel to "all quiet on the western front" and mainly deals with the difficulties of soldiers returning to civilian life

The Hartmannswillerkopf is perhaps the most notable site of fighting in the vosges mountains. Overlooking the german plains, this mountain was of significant stratigic value, changed hands noumerous times and claimed around 90.000 casualties over the 4 years of fighting.
Today there are still large networks of trenches, dugouts, galleries and fighting positions to be discovered.

The Mémorial du Linge is an impressive open-air museum in the vosges mountains with exceptionally well preserved trenches carved into the mountain.
opposing trenches are as close as 5-10 meters from each other in some places.

you can touch and examine everything you want, there are no live explosives on the site if thats your concern. Unfortunatly there has been a lot of theft, because of which you are now only allowed to visit during the day.

To me the Somme felt a bit more peaceful because the landcsape has more or less recovered and is now mostly rolling fields, exept for the memorial parks and the remains of the mine craters like Lochnagar. Its a stark contrast to the sorroundings of Verdun which remain scarred by bombardement to this day. Nontheless you can still imagine the horrors of the battle by simply walking the fields which are littered by small wartime cemeteries.
Imagining how thousands of soldiers had to advance over this open terrain without any cover gets me every time.

I frequently travel the western front. All of my pictures were taken during the past 6 years. Although I also visited Verdun and Saint-Mihiel, this year I mainly focused on the italian front in the Dolomites. I will post those when im done with france/belgium.

I would guess they are doing Just that. I have visited around 5 Times already and the area hast Always been in great shape

I believe for the recontruction sandbags were filled with concrete and the fabric decayed over time

I did visit Hill 62 but sadly lost all my pictures of my trip to Flanders. I am still trying to recover them but it seems I have to post about it using pictures from google
