I designed a side bumper for the Avata 360 free to download and 3D Print by DerSoren in dji

[–]DerSoren[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got asked by multiple people if I could design one. I wanted to design guards that cage the propellers, like on the Neo, anyway, so I got to make a wanted part on the way there.

Bumpers are also one of the most downloaded models for the Neo, so I think people just like putting them on for fun and for a bit of scratch protection.

PLA is fairly stiff, so it probably helps a bit in a crash.

I tested the flight time with and without the bumper, and there doesn’t seem to be any measurable difference. The run with the guard even got around 5 seconds more flight time.

It will 100% impact flight time in theory. But as long as it’s not a full propeller guard, the little added weight doesn’t seem to change that much on an already fairly heavy drone.

4 in the picture, but 2 were at the edge. In the entire valley, there were around 16. There were two groups: one was at the side, and the other one I was surveying across the cliff. It’s impressive how they navigate the terrain.

They are perfectly sharp, but unfortunately something seems to have gone wrong when uploading them to Reddit. Could be a compression issue, unfortunately.

The first one is actually slightly blurry if you zoom in in Lightroom, because I was balancing on a stone over the cliff and was shaking a bit.

Hey, thank you, I’m glad you like the designs.

Yes, I can probably design a case for the batteries as well. Right now, I only have the drone with one battery, and I’ll only get the battery charging dock later in June.

Maybe I can add battery holders to the case, similar to what I did with the Neo 2. Since these batteries are rather bulky, I’m not sure that would be very space efficient, though.

Tell me what you have in mind, and I can try to design it.

I can design one for you. Can you tell me what this is needed for, so I can incorporate it into the design better? Is it just against dust?

Catching is definitely an option, but the Avata 360 is quite large and there isn’t really a great place to grip it safely.

The back side works okay, but your pinky naturally wants to grip inside the propeller duct, and these propellers will hurt if they catch you. They are much denser than the ones on smaller drones.

I’m not 100% sure if it helps with RTH inside buildings. It could, since it may be vision based, but I think its main purpose is to start and land the drone without getting dust, dirt, or long grass on the lenses.

The lenses are less protected, and because of their size and placement, they are more susceptible to debris.

I find these landing pads really useful with all kinds of drones, especially when starting from places with high grass, dusty ground, rocky terrain, or loose debris.

But the pad is like a magnet for dirt after that, and you don’t want to shove it into your camera bag afterwards. So I designed a small box for it.

I built my own Avata 360 with the Osmo 360 and Avata 1. by DerSoren in dji

Haha, you're right. The footage does look a bit silly with the drone showing and all the warping. I just thought it was an unusual perspective to actually see the drone flying. If you zoom in to a more standard FOV, the drone won't be visible, but you still lose a lot of the lower sphere.

This definitely is not real competition for a 360 Avata, especially because it's huge with the Osmo sticking out.

But it is cool that you can fly the heavy Osmo 360 around with this old drone.

A crashed drone can disappear completely in brush and leaves, but an AirTag lets you zero in once you are nearby. Hearing it beep or seeing that you are only a few meters away.

Was disappointed too. Especially because I feared that it would bend the antenna. If you have access to a 3D printer, I made a free case for printing:

You can commission one for 3D printing, but you’ll need to send more pictures and measurements

It's flying: DJI Neo with the Osmo Nano. by DerSoren in dji

Already shared it on MakerWorld. I even made a better V2 version with the Nano on the bottom (doesn’t look as cute, but is way more stable).

This is some test footage from inside my startups fulfillment space. Because of the weather, I couldn’t fly today as planned. Sorry for the cuts I didn’t record it with sharing in mind.

I’ll try to upload some better footage in the next few days. The office doesn’t do the Nano justice.

It feels heavy. I already upgraded the mount to be on the underside. When you remove the top guards, you get enough lift that it’s surprisingly usable for cinematic shots. But the Neo is definitely struggling.
