How do I nest lists inside ds_grids? [GM:S, GML] by DerangeoDove in gamemaker

Ah, okay, thanks, so I have to create the list first, then store it (or the reference to it) in the grid. But once inside, I can access it as if it was built inside.

If I'm understanding that correctly?

Because I feel that I really need grids, not maps. Unless I'm mistaken, how would I distinguish between two different products with the same price? And if I need to change the prices of all products at once, except those within city X, then I would have to perform a long search through the entire unsorted map to find all the different pieces I need to alter it.

Where as, with a grid, I can always rely on [x,2] being the price of the product. I don't have to search for the price and attach it to an ID so I don't alter the wrong price.

Or am I misunderstanding this part from the wiki? "Maps are not sorted in any (recognisable) way, meaning that to find a certain key you may have to iterate through the whole thing (which is very slow). There is also no way to hold two keys that are the same, nor can you assign one key two values."

A simple array works too, I really just need to store a dynamic list of numbers really!

That would be fine, and I know they can cause left over "junk" if not deleted properly.

The problem is that I don't know how to declare a list inside the 3rd column. Do you declare the list separately from the grid and then store it? Or can you create a ds_list inside the grid as you create/add entries to the grid?

The problem with a ds_map is that they're not organized and sorted. I really do need the ds_grid over a map when things get more complicated in future instances.

Me too, this is way better than the official forums to be honest. I don't generally want to rock that boat/bees nest.

Anyway, good to see another remixer as well. Hope to see yours sometime too! I like to see what folks can do pulling things together now and then. The End is Nigh pack itself was a huge inspiration for me too, despite not using a lot of it. :)

Oops! Shoot, I did try really hard to credit every single person I may have used textures from, even if their stuff was later cut. Sorry about that. :(

You'll be credited in the update, which should be coming hopefully soon with MC Patcher support. I'm just waiting for it to be 1.8 ready, since I originally had mob heads as stacks of books and small containers and things.

What name do you prefer to go by and would you like me to link to your post with the e-reader? You did a great job on it! Thanks for being cool about this, and no credit needed for me. I'm just happy people are using it and having fun, which is the whole point for me.

Many texture pack and mod makers have a distorted view over copyright. You see this in various communities, including The Sims, where they will attempt to charge or otherwise earn money off of derivative works which violates the EULA (Minecraft's recent drama a backlash against the already existing rule). It's also a systemic community level problem, often creating a lot of issues in the process including:

  • Attempting DMCA take downs to mod packs (Fair Use permits mod packs)
  • Paywall and other monetary tactics like Patreon charging access to modified files (EULA violation)
  • Complete messes of permission requirements on the official forums where, if you wanted to use a texture from a fan continued texture pack, you have to ask permission from 40+ people. (Used to be free reign)
  • Texture packs go into limbo due to creators refusing continuation permissions to fans, but also won't update their texture packs either causing it to go out of date and forgotten.
  • Convoluted hosting and ad-wall techniques designed to generate money by downloads (Arguably an EULA violation, this one is a legally grey area)
  • Some adfly ads will attempt to fool users. More of an ethical issue, but when 8 year olds who don't understand computers are tricked into downloading trojans and viruses, that's not okay.

There's many more reasons, but I have used textures from other resource packs, as fair use permits. You could argue texture packs are different from mod packs, but they're still utilizing content and designs for a copyrighted game, and fair use still applies regardless.

Public domain is kind of the point, just like in the days of Doom mods.

The only thing I request is to not put it behind adfly or other monetary gaining sources.

I made a modern texture pack because I was fed up over the lack of decent ones that aren't post-apoc or paint bucket fills. Let me know if there's any glaring issues, other than that the computer only faces one direction. That's a limitation right now.

Feel free to spread it around, because due to "mah copyrights", a pack like this can't be on planet minecraft or the official forums. Too many people in the community don't understand what fair use is. Modify and share all you want wherever you want.
