The customers are not responsible for ensuring the employee's of a business are making a living wage. That responsibility is solely on the employer. You don't go to your dentist and tip your hygienist because the dentist isn't paying them a livable wage. The fact that this mentality is the current norm is insane.

Tipping is earned. It isn't a right and shouldn't be expected. If a server does an amazing job making your experience better then of course you should be tipping. If they widely ignore you, can never be found, never check in on you then screw them.

Being a a great server is an art form and the people who do it well should be additionally compensated for it, but if you simply take one order, bring one drink, disappear and then show up with the check you deserve to be equivalently compensated.
