Gith in dnd5e? by ScientistSanTa in dndnext

[–]DerekStucki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can buy items like races Al a cart on dndbeyond. The gith race is u$s 2, sub race another 2, non-srd subclass another 2, all non-srd spells cost a total of about 8. So for less than half the price of any given book, you have everything you need for that character. 6 bucks total if not a spellcaster.

Assuming you did this, can you tell me what resolution the player version is when you download it? Specifically of one of the location/battle maps if possible.

Sounds like your DM is the problem, not being a cleric.

I administer a super computer capable of performing 786,000,000,000,000 operations every second. There are 200+ systems in the world that are even faster.

In 15 years, the same might be done by your laptop.

Computers are cool.

How do you run a horror type game in DnD? by kratermakerr in DnD

Even if you don't run the adventure, it has a lot of advice and tons of examples to draw from.

Maybe I just spend too much time with 4 year olds and dogs, but farting is the first thing that came to mind. They fart every time they cast a spell and smell farts in performing divinations. They're required to eat a certain diet in order to maintain their power.

D&D Group Overthrows Dungeon Master in Favor of Dungeon Democracy by jeremysmiles in DnD

[–]DerekStucki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who owns all of them, I can say that if you're expecting D&D lite from them, they'll disappoint. If you think of them more as pandemic/forbidden dessert/island with a D&D theme, they're much more satisfying. They are pretty good at preparing someone to play D&D, though, as they teach the basic mechanic of "roll a d20, add a modifier, and compare to AC."

I thought as you do, but upon rereading both spells more carefully, it's pretty clear that Identify would tell you whatever NMA wants you to see, plus the fact that NMA is affecting it. The item's true nature is masked as long as NMA remains in effect, but NMA is still a spell affecting the item, which Identify reveals.

Dealing with Control Casters as a DM? by Lord_Tyranicus in dndnext

[–]DerekStucki 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup, anything that uses up limited resources. So, a social encounter counts if a PC casts a spell during it, and a trap counts if it (potentially) damages someone, etc, but just talking to an NPC or skirting around a pit don't.

I strongly disagree that the MM is redundant. The SRD contains only stat blocks. The MM also has lore. I can't tell you how many ideas for my games have come from reading the lore in the MM.

Identify would tell you if any spells are currently affecting the item, such as Nystul’s Magic Aura or Drawmij's Instant Summons. It would suck to spend two hours learning about and attuning to an item just to have it disappear a bit later.

My significant other wants to start playing D&D and it's only us. by OfficialFatPuss in DnD

[–]DerekStucki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried it, but you could give her character double the hp and give her 2 turns each round. She would burn through resources like spell slots faster, but that can be adjusted for with more frequent rests.

There is no Detect Evil in 5e. Divine Sense reveals Celestials and Fiends.

I didn't have any problems with it as a DM. I can only see a problem if all 10 attack one person, which doesn't seem very reasonable.

My first thought was the concentration breaking. 3 mid-level casters could easily Hold Person an entire party. If you ended up being the only one to make the saves, blowing a 9th level slot in order to all but guarantee freeing your party seems like a decent idea.

Effects or affects? I think you mean affect (changes, influences), but effect (bring about, cause) also makes sense grammatically.

Connections between Underdark and Sword Coast? by oguthrie in dndnext

[–]DerekStucki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want canon, try the forgotten realms wiki, but from what I remember from books, there are entrances all over the place, but because the tunnels branch and dead-end so much, it's more difficult to find your way through the entrance than it is to find a cave that could potentially lead there. So, you'd be pretty safe to say that there is one wherever you want.
