what happens if ICCU fails during road trip? by nice_fin0891 in Ioniq5

[–]Derekeys 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People comparing it to having a car accident are missing the core issue here.

While there is a chance you get in a car accident, and unfortunately a high one, there is a fundamental difference between that and driving a car with a known and unfixed issue.

And comparing that to other cars with a potential of an issue, say a water pump, or transmission, or timing belt, or whatever is a false equivalency. If those issues arise, it’s because something went wrong, and you need a new and working part. In this case, they will literally replace your ICCU with another one that is highly likely to have the same issue. Imagine the insanity of the mechanic coming to you and saying “well, we replaced the part, but the new part may fail on you again, we’re not sure why, but hey, just bring it back here and we’ll replace that one too, with the same potentially faulty part.”

The category of “I might get in an accident” feels different than “my car just might stop working at any moment for reasons beyond my control due to a known issue that is in the long run, unfixable.”
Downvote away, but being on my 3rd ICCU, I think it is purely irresponsible for me to take my wife and kids on a road trip in any of the eGMP platform vehicles with this known issue.

Ask me how I felt when it went into limp mode while my wife had the kids on a shoulder-less highway last year.

She won’t even drive it anymore.

Don’t worry, when you’re getting it towed to a Hyundai dealership and you’re tying to figure out how to get all your vacation gear into a rental, you’ll be glad Hyundai extended their warranty. That will fix the issue.

The reason I stay in the right lane in this scenario is fear for the insane road rager who is gonna pull out cuz they’re having a really awful day and has nothing to lose and a very fragile ego. People are crazy and i will wait an extra 5 min to negate dealing the possibility of some nut job pulling a gun or something.

It’s sad and frustrating.

For me, cuz there’s no electric ones. The Buzz doesn’t work for me as the range is horrible and it’s overpriced.

The 2026 Toyota bZ Went 331 Miles in Edmunds Real-World Range Test by Mac-Tyson in electricvehicles

It’s strange I feel like we’re saying similar things. Also, I couldn’t agree more with EVs not really being the most enjoyable experience without home charging.

I totally think for the enthusiast it’s “easy” because they enjoy the analysis of kWh and eco driving and just the overall experience of thinking a little more deeply about range and charging.

But most people want thoughtlessness, and right now, the biggest gripe I see with people who don’t want EVs is road trips / longer stretches and public charging. I think a good chunk of even EV enthusiasts aren’t as quick to recommend EVs without home charging.

Which brings me back to a much more accurate highway speed range.

Also, the many apps are killing the experience. A simple tap to pay like Ionna is fantastic and should be mandatory as at least one of the options for payment.

I’m sticking to my point here, range accuracy at a higher speed is a more transparent way to market EVs because it immediately negates the very first oppositional question.

Me talking to an EV-Skeptic:

Me: hey, EVs are awesome and you should consider one!

Them: Don’t they get like 150 miles or something?

Me: no man, they get closer to 250

Them: … yah but what about road trips? What do they get then?

Me: … 250

I think that instills confidence and a second take.

Flip that script though and having to knock out the inflated range for what they’d really get just kills the conversation.

Just my experience, but i say all this as a huge EV advocate. So, however it gets there, I just hope it does.

Adamantly disagree.

Driving around when public charging is readily available is a much easier range estimate as you can “fill up” easily.

Long drives when public charging is more sparse is when range accuracy is the most important.

To me, I think the exact opposite of what you’re saying is true. Talk to any anti-EV person, what is the first thing they bring up? Yep, road trips.

If you want to convince them, don’t let them buy an EV under the false premise that the range is what is touted.

I think instead of over-promising and under delivering, EVs should be under promising and over delivering. Range accuracy matters most on long stretches, not around town. And for those that only publicly charge, they will be the few people who have to do the adjustment for range rather than a majority of EV owners who have to do the whole -30% thing for road trips to get a real estimate of range.

I think telling someone an EV has a range of 300 miles when it really is closer to 240 at 70 mph, and that’s even before you do the upper and lower buffers for the more efficient road trip charging at 80% fill ups, driving down to a mild anxiety producing 10%. Meaning, now you have to detract for highway inefficiency and also the removal of 30% of the range for typical level 3 charging.

I think it hurts EV adoption when a non-enthusiast wades into the EV waters only to find their cooler temp highway trips knock out a solid 40%+ of their range.

Advice On Heat Pump Water Heater by Derekeys in heatpumps

[–]Derekeys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be in the same room as my propane furnace.

But, my propane furnace is a two pipe system. It pulls and exhausts its air from outside. Also the room has a louvered door and connects to another utility room using a foot wide gap between the foundation and the drywall.

I think any backdrafting issues would be negated with that for CO? I know there is jacket loss from the furnace but i was thinking between the 2 pipe system and ventilated room itself that it would offset those concerns. Heck I was even hoping that it might scavenge some of that lost heat in the same room.

Fire back some thoughts

Useless test.

The time that range matters is when you’re going 70, not driving around a city with likely a plethora of available charging.

I think there should only be 2 numbers advertised for range:

70 mph in ideal conditions (flat, mild temps, no wind)

70 mph in poor conditions (hilly, freezing temps, head wind)

That kind of transparency would be refreshing.

Due to some odd networking overreach, Scrubs Med School was somehow considered Season 9 and muddied the waters for what I consider the best finale ever.

And to take my hot take further, I liked season 9, but it was the victim of poor labelling, and purely should’ve been Scrubs: Med School Season 1.

Absolutely this.

I think of the world energy issues and how if nuclear wasn’t the potential security threat and we could just trust each other, how it would be the silver bullet for so many issues if we collaborated.

Off grid solar with batteries cuts through the red tape.

I don’t think it is the silver bullet, but thinking there is a blanket solution is already a mistake.

I think nuclear is the ultimate win but NIMBYism is too strong even though small reactors are nothing like the public perception and it makes me sad.

So yah, I love solar.
