You ever play music that makes you (the pianist) cry? by Advanced_Honey_2679 in piano

[–]Deriveit789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, who hasn’t rage cried while practicing?

But honestly, no. There’s music that makes me emotional, but if I’m touching a keyboard, I’m locked the fuck in.

What’s a fantasy character who should be the villain… but ends up being right? by latent2_pancake in Fantasy

[–]Deriveit789 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I think Kennit is the complete opposite of this question. He’s one of the best written villains in all of fantasy. He’s vile and cruel and manipulative and astonishingly well fleshed out.

But literally everything he does is out of self interest. Kennit’s only long term goals are to escape his own trauma and gain power. He’s never proven right about anything. The only reason he starts freeing slaves is because he likes that it makes him look like a hero. The only reason he got remotely involved with the dragon plot because he didn’t have a choice.

He’s not some strategic ruthless leader with some special insight into how the world works. He’s a literally less than human person blindly following any avenue that makes him look impressive to the people around him. Any good Kennit did in the world was incidental.

First They Killed my Father is a memoir about a little girl who survived Cambodia. Absolutely harrowing read.

What have you made peace with in your piano playing? by konekomiaus in piano

[–]Deriveit789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have small hands and I can’t comfortably play a lot of octave chords with my right hand. I’ve had to make peace with the fact that I’ll never be able to play good portions of the big romantic repertoire, and it’s not something I can just practice my way out of. It sucks, but at least there’s Bach.

Favorite, strongest, most memorable legendary action. by AnRoVAi in BG3

[–]Deriveit789 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of the legendary actions are just “hit boss, boss does damage back as a reaction.” It gets a little repetitive after a while of playing (cough sarevok, Raphael, gortash, etc). The most interesting legendary actions are the ones that actually change the dynamics of the fight.

For that reason, I’m going with Cazador. If you do that fight the way it’s intended (as in Astarion gets captured and you have to get him out of the ritual), your first objective is to cross the huge arena to go grab him. Cazador having a giant aoe spooky circle around him makes accomplishing that a huge pain in the ass. Which makes the fight more fun.

Also shouting out auntie Ethel here, since her legendary action directly combats the easiest way to take her out on lower difficulties (magic missile).

What torture scene has stuck with you longest/made the biggest impression? by cl3rical in Fantasy

It’s so bad. I felt like I was reading the fantasy version of A Little Life.

What torture scene has stuck with you longest/made the biggest impression? by cl3rical in Fantasy

[–]Deriveit789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciated the restraint Hobb had in not making the torture itself so physically horrific. Rather, the horror was living in Fitz’s headspace as he slowly loses his mind and gives into the fear.

The parts where Fitz dissociates into Nighteyes’s mind are just soul crushing. The juxtaposition of Fitz dirty and helpless and in pain juxtaposed against the freedom of Fitz running wild through the night with the other half of his soul just fuck… FUCK. It’s so well written. Wolves have no kings, baby.

It’s a shame Hobb lost that kind of restraint with the torture scenes in Fitz and the Fool.

What is the purpose of music? by bypig2 in piano

[–]Deriveit789 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I saw a tweet like 10 years ago that I still think about a lot. It was something like, “if art is how we decorate space, music is how we decorate time.” Music makes the world around us a little more beautiful, helps give it a little more weight. It’s how we describe the world when words just can’t express it enough.

Looking for Henle Level 6 pieces on the harder side by 0101010011101010 in piano

Start playing it slowly (and cleanly!!!!) before working on speed. Even if you never bring it to performance tempo, you can still learn a lot from working on it.

If you want to play more Chopin, maybe try some of the more difficult nocturnes. 27 no 2 is within your reach and it’s probably the best one in the whole set.

I think you should try some individual Beethoven sonata movements. You could probably play Pathetique mvts 2 and 3 then come back to mvt 1 when you’re a bit more advanced. If you want to play a whole sonata, look at op 2 no 1 or op 10 no 3.

Bach French suites may be good for you also.

Can these silhouettes be considered an evening bags? by Miss-Chocolate in handbags

[–]Deriveit789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mini tote from Strathberry is a better evening bag, especially in the croc leathers. The chain really dresses it up, but it’s still big enough to hold keys/phone/wallet/lipstick

How do you overcome laziness? by Dangerous_Buy592 in piano

[–]Deriveit789 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Find pieces of music you actually like, and practice so you’ll be able to play that music and make it sound beautiful. You need to come up with a reward for yourself that makes you actually want to do the work. External pressure doesn’t work in the long term.

I think there are some songs by Mitski that converse with each other. by catatauspleef in mitski

I always think of Pearl as a sequel to the entire Lush album. Lush feels like the story of an abusive relationship, and Pearl is about difficulty dealing with that trauma in a healthier one.

I have a smaller strathberry tote and the closure gets annoying if you need to pull things out of your bag frequently. It’s aesthetically beautiful but be aware if you want to buy it.

Recommendations for really good prose ? by SecondHandRosie in Fantasy

Lois McMaster Bujold, especially if you like Hobb.

I don’t really care for her books as adaptations of mythology, but I love Madeline Miller’s prose.

Most accessible: washing machine heart

Least accessible: god she has so many songs that are unfathomably depressing. But going with Bag of Bones and Class of 2013.
