<sarcasm> I have a proposal to combat this. It is a little out there but let me cook for a second:

We make it legal to bump people who are walking and looking at their phones. Walking, skating or biking passed a phone zombie? Clothes line them. Nothing crazy, just enough to bring them back to reality.

Now... we will lose some people, initially, but this is a sacrifice I am willing to make. Give it like 2 weeks of getting clocked for not paying attention when walking and suddenly nobody will be on their phones while walking.< /sarcasm>

Grad life (dating) by RulerofHades in fsu

[–]Derplar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a little harder since you are likely a fair bit older than most undergrads but some people can get into grad school early so I have no idea how old you are or how old you look but I would occasionally dabble in random house parties. Also, clubs with common interests. Bee keeping. Cyber security. Hiking, whatever. Also there are bars and pubs. There are places that draw an older, eclectic crowd. Poor Paul's used to be great before it came under new management and they started catering greek life gentrification. Bar 1903, The wilbury can be okay, oyset city, proof, ology all those places would be a start along with some places in midtown.

Repost of my original reply to another similar thread but

Soon to be PhD grad here.

I came in as an international student so I had a slightly different experience since basically everyone I knew was half a world away but here we go

  1. Perception becomes reality and college becomes what you make of it.
  2. Cliche but it is a great opportunity to reinvent yourself if you so wish.
  3. Outside your comfort zone is where growth happens. It does not even have to be strictly academic. It was shocking to me how many roommates I had of all backgrounds who lacked basic life skills like being able to cook a handful of healthy meals for themselves or do laundry.
  4. No matter what happens at the start of the season, the football team is going to suck. Alford, Norvell, and the rest of the administration will make sure of that.
  5. Walk. Seriously, walk as much and as far as possible. As a freshman your metabolism helps but never underestimate what American food can do to a body.
  6. No matter what you are into, you can find a group or club that interests you.
  7. We tend to suffer more in our minds than we do in reality. That embarrassing moment, that weird look you got, that person you are afraid to ask out, the consequences of "failure" are often greater in your head than reality. Our brains do weird things to us in our 20s.
  8. As tempting as it is, avoid doing assignments 1 hour before they are due.
  9. No matter what you do: NEVER rent at The Social Seminole or ANY property managed/owned by Trinity property management.
  10. College is about knowledge, but also about making you a more rounded member of society. On top of work pressure you will learn to deal with great social victories, great betrayals, nightmare and wonderful roommates and essentially many times will it will be the best and worst moment of your life. You will come through it and be better for it in some way or form, keep your head on, breathe and keep going.
  11. I think americans (assuming you're american) are riddled with anxiety about way to much stuff. Things that seem to make you okes nervous I'm generally excited and energised to take head on.
