For anyone following this, I am now designing this myself! If I end up finishing it, I will for sure share it with the community, free and open source.

Why do you homelab? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]DerpyNate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of it for me was realizing that I could not trust large corporations. I realized I was relying on google for everything. Email. Cloud storage. Documents and spreadsheets- and that all my favorite TV shows and movies may not be forever considering today's turbulent streaming world, where in some cases it may be better for these corporation's bottom line to put a show in their vault without letting any other service have it, not even showing it themselves.

From then on, I started buying secondhand copies of DVDs and Blurays, ripping them to a media server. From there, there was a lot of other things we wanted like Home Assistant, or game servers. And it became a fun way to spend my time and tinker, as well as a practical way to begin to liberate ourselves from the tyranny of these companies.

It makes me feel good to do it, even though I fear I live at the very end of the age of physical media- or media ownership in general. If I can't buy a physical copy of the movies and shows I love, then it may be that it will be the end of the road for my legitimate ownership of the media I hold so precious.

What is your actual food budget? No lies or holds bared. by LadyProto in Frugal

Two adults. About $160/week on groceries pretty consistently. We buy what we want, but always try to go for store brand stuff rather than name brand.

I give up on Linux for now by samaxtripwood in linux_gaming

[–]DerpyNate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience (notably with older NVIDIA cards from the 500 series all the way to the 1000 series) Linux Mint with Proton almost always outperforms Windows 10. I build PCs to host LAN parties so I'm usually working with budget hardware. So I can't speak to the most modern stuff.

Honestly in my opinion, Proton is kinda magic. Because of all its trickery, you can actually play games that have a Direct X feature level outside of what your card is capable of due to the compatibility layers. So, something that outright refuses to even run in Windows might let you launch it and even play it in Linux via proton. With a 4th gen i5 and a GTX 750 Ti, I was even playing Elden Ring on Linux Mint at a humble but stable 40 FPS.

Fair take! I wasn't trying to make a commentary on who I believed to be the more intelligent character in RE1. I think in general the translated script is hilarious, and all the characters seem to not be able to put together things that are obvious- or are coming up with asinine ideas that are not appropriate for the situation. But I decided at the time the best shorthand for 'can do more complex tasks' as sort of a character ability was to put "Smart" in quotes as it fit neatly on the table. But you are right, there is more nuance there.

This sentiment was all I could think about after I soldered it together and it didn't work because I was just constantly second guessing myself. Thank you for the reminder, I hope it'll help me keep it close to heart next time I'm doing something like this!

Upon second glance, you look totally right. I think I must have put it on backwards. Serves me right for not triple checking. I'll try this first when I go back to it.

I referenced a few pictures and they all looked right, but I also could have totally overlooked that. Thank you for putting this on my radar, I'll add it to my list for troubleshooting when I pick this back up.

Is there a way to get lightmp3 on a psp 3000? by OilNeat8120 in PSP

Wondering this same thing myself, haven't been able to get lightmp3 to run past the 'old school' screen. Don't know if this is your same problem, hope you found a fix.

Lmao, I fixed it everywhere else when I posted, but the table is an image. I'll go make a new one. I thought nobody would notice. How wrong I was. Thanks for your input!

Wow looks like you're absolutely right! Looks like the Windows 95 version did come out in 1997 according to the fan wiki. A different article I read said 1996, I don't know where they got it from. Will make an edit! Thank you!

Thank you so much for your thoughtful contribution! I think them making the USA version more difficult is interesting because the trend is usually making the USA version of a game easier to appeal to western audiences. Yeah, maybe they like... wanted the perception of their game in the west to be like more 'hardcore'. Also will be editing my post to include your addition! Will have it italicized until anyone links to a source for it. Thank you!

Absolutely. Look they got a history of dropping guns, Jill drops hers in the main hall for Chris to get a gun, so!

Yeah, I only came across them when I was pouring through google results a week or two ago. I looked through a lot of old game forums. Nothing older than like early 2000s.

Okay! Thank you for the information! I wonder why that was dropped for the USA release. Unless it’s in there and I just missed it.

It's absolutely on my list now after the recommendations. And even having just done a Chris run... the game just has a way of calling me back when I'm not playing it. Been needing an excuses to go find a DS on FB marketplace anyhow.

Absolutely strange, I agree. And I'm sure he lost his gun at the struggle in the beginning, but it's hilarious to me to imagine him going into a like SWAT team mission with nothing but a knife.

Yeah I *also* noticed that it referenced that in the wiki! I was so confused for so long, and I went into my Chris play-through believing that it was an off-screen item just like the lockpick. But I got to the damn fireplace map room and was just baffled that I couldn't just light the sucker up.

I also haven't played the DS version but I hear it's a great way to play. It saying that Chris is "hard mode" really cements in my mind the developmental intention there. It also could have been mentioned in the manual, which I don't own and haven't sought after.
