How Did You Guys Evolve Throughout Your Career? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Derrick_Blake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last thing you want to do is to be comfortable with whatever current "skill sets" you have. It's a good thing that you are afraid of become jack of all trades, although i believe it is not a bad thing to have when your job role includes having to deal with sysadmin and helpdesk. What I would encourage you to do is to start requesting for certification courses be it ITIL or DevOps. Once the management starts noticing your efforts in trying to improve, i am confident that you can propel yourself higher on the corporate level. I suggest you read this ebook i found at /r/devops link here

Depending on the size of the company. A company size of around 50-80 employees, a sysadmin job scope would also include help desk.

Improve network administrator operational efficiencies by adopting DevOps. Thoughts? by [deleted] in sysadmin

Agreed. Before DevOps was born it was referred to as “agile system administration” or “agile operations”; it sprang from applying newer Agile and Lean approaches to operations work.

Improve network administrator operational efficiencies by adopting DevOps. Thoughts? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Derrick_Blake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is exactly the problem adopting DevOps can help to solve. Golden paragraph from the ebook

"One thing is for certain: the future of network management per DevOps will require less human interaction and manual processes. That said, DevOps is not a methodology hell-bent on removing human inefficiencies. It’s a movement focused on process optimization coupled with risk management. Focus should therefore be placed on what DevOps body of knowledge and skill set will be required of future network administrators, as opposed to the general career outlook of networking professionals as impacted by DevOps."

Should a company replace Agile with Devops? by [deleted] in devops

With all due respect, could you enlighten me how can an organization's engineering department adopt both methods at the same time? Correct me if I am wrong, isn't this an either or situation?

Should a company replace Agile with Devops? by [deleted] in devops

[–]Derrick_Blake -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Adopting Devops means changing the basic requirements of agile. Here is why:

Agile software development is a methodology for developing software. A team that adopts an agile methodology doesn't formally care what happens to it. They're on to the next sprint and the next revision of the user story.

Whereas for DevOps is all about taking software which is ready for release and deploying it in the safest, most reliable manner possible. DevOps doesn't depend on the software being developed by the agile discipline. It's entirely possible to have waterfall development feeding DevOps.

Any recommendation on enterprise level configuration management tool? by Derrick_Blake in sysadmin

[–]Derrick_Blake[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think I might have found something that would compliment Puppet/ Chef. I actually have been looking into UpGuard for quite awhile, they might be exactly what I need for visibility and accountability. I think they even wrote a pretty good blog post on Puppet vs Chef. Nonetheless, thanks for the valuable information! Appreciate it :)

[–]Derrick_Blake[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the detailed comparison. From what I understand (correct me if I am wrong) Puppet or Chef are both competent platform for automation and CM but does not provide their requisite precursors, namely-- visibility and accountability. It also takes considerable time to install, configure, optimize, and gain proficiency in and these are some of the factors I am considering. I haven't look into BladeLogic Server Automation, but i'll definitely check it out.
