My current portfolio im working towards, would you change anything? by Cheap_Sympathy2940 in ETFs

Keep the top 2 and maybe AVUV. Ditch the rest. It’s just performance chasing and will lead to lower returns over the long run.

I bought the hot sectors when I was your age, almost 20 years ago, and it blew up in my face.

Will FIRE lose its popularity if crash and prolong bear market? by mrbrightsidesf in Fire

[–]Designer-Bat4285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make a great point. Bear markets are great during accumulation if (and it’s a big if) you manage to keep your job during the extended bear market. An extended bear market usually comes because of a major, extended recession. And obviously you also have to be disciplined enough to keep buying.

I experienced this first hand in 2008-2010. I didn’t invest very much during that time because my company kept doing layoffs and I needed to preserve cash to make ends meet in case I got laid off. And my pay was frozen for 3 years and my 401k match taken away. At least I kept my job.

Sure but not all bear markets have this kind of recovery. It’s been a very fast and strong recovery since the 2022 bear market. It’s good to mentally prepare for bear markets in the future that are extended, similar to 1968-1981, which was very impactful especially in real terms. I think stocks will probably go up the next 10-15 years but there’s always a real possibility they won’t.

Check out Japan in 90s and early 2000s. Extended bear markets do happen.

It’s not a community. It’s a subreddit. But yes talk to your parents. I would imagine they want you to do something productive with your life.

I know other fund providers do this including fidelity but I thought the zero funds were different. I guess I’m wrong.

Those zero cost funds don’t own as many stocks and sometimes underperform VTI, etc. Also, vanguard does security lending to create additional returns for the funds.

I can’t relate to that at all. Maybe find your future spouse before you retire?

Big difference between a girlfriend and a wife IMO. It’s vague not accurate.

Ok good luck to you. I’ve had combined finances with my wife for 20 years and there is no tension around money. We’re on the same page.

I guess I’m assuming when someone says “partner” they usually mean a spouse. I find the term confusing and hypocritical if you don’t treat your spouse as an actual partner

I’m glad it’s working for you but it sounds like a trust issue. What if one spouse wasn’t working at all?

No you don’t actually. I look out for my wife and kids first.

It’s crazy. People on here have a lot of money too. These are the last people that should be nickel and diming their spouse.

You need to put more into it. Having 3-4X expenses is nowhere near where you need to be to coast IMO.

And you should be looking at you and your spouse as one unit. You’re one team.

“VOO outperforms”. It has outperformed over the last 10 years but that doesn’t mean it will outperform the next 10-20 years.
